My Highland, Utah House – Sources

I get so many questions about all the finishes and furnishings in our Highland, Utah home so I’m finally sharing the details here! In this post I will list all the information that I have on the home. Many of the furnishings are no longer available but when I can link a source for something similar I will share that info or another option at the bottom of the post.

The Story Behind the Home

We purchased the home from Rachel and Drew Parcell in July of 2016. Rachel is a fashion blogger and I had started following her on Instagram just before we bought the house. When I first saw one of her posts showing her house, I had thought it was a house I had seen in another Utah neighborhood years before called Stonegate. I even had pictures in my phone of this other home and didn’t realize they were different until I compared the photos.

The original house that the Highland house was inspired by was designed by designer Desiree Ashworth and has been featured in many magazines and blog posts. Drews parents used to live next door to the Stonegate house (so I hear) and they drew their inspiration for this home from the original french country style home. There are many of the same finishes and designs in the home and some very different, but both homes are stunning. We love that we were able to purchase the home from the Parcells. It was actually Rachel that inspired me to start blogging and she was very supportive. She warned me how much work it was and boy was she right!! I had no idea what I was getting myself into.  She was the first person to see my blog before it was published in July of 2018. I’ve loved blogging and sharing all things “home” here and on Instagram but it is a lot of time and work. Overall though, I’ve loved the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made and I’ve learned A LOT over the past two years!

Rachels husband Drew built the home and he built their current home after selling this one to us. We have loved living in Utah part time as it allows us to see our children more often as they have all lived there off and on while in college. We live just outside of Seattle the rest of the time.

My most asked question about the house is what color is the walls and white cabinets and trim!

Wall Color: Benjamin Moore Ashwood

Trim and Cabinets: White Dove

Exterior:

The home is 100% limestone from Texas. I do not know the trim color of the house but if and when I find out, I’ll update it here.

The front doors are painted with a glazed finish. I do not have the source of the doors but I know they are from a door company in Utah.

Windows:

The windows are wood clad windows and the paint color is custom. The window contractor told me they are from Windsor Windows out of Des Moines, Iowa and they made up a name for the blue window color- Windsor Blue Green. It’s a powder coat paint finish. Engineered Walnut floors. The type I have is no longer being made.

Master Bedroom

The wallpaper is grass cloth and the walls are Benjamin Moore Ashwood. Trim is White Dove. The carpet is wool and I’m not sure of the name or brand. To see more details on the Master Bedroom click here:

The Blue Room

The Blue Room has wall paper in it that was put in by the previous owners. I had the source at one point but last I checked it had been discontinued. For more details on the Blue Room Room click here.

The Blue Room and The Gray Room have a jack and jill bathroom between them. Here are some photos of that room. Wall color is Benjamin Moore Ashwood and trim is White Dove.

The Gray Room

The paint colors are the same as noted above and are the same throughout the house. BM Ashwood and White Dove is the trim. To see more details on this room click here to see the Gray Room

There is also the Pink Room which I haven’t taken any photos in yet and the Black Room which I haven’t shown yet either.

A Beautiful + Organized Master Closet

I have never shared the details of my closet and so many have asked to see more of it, so here it is! I love having a beautiful + organized master closet. I am lucky enough to have this all to myself since my husband has his own closet. I’ll also share the closet inside the closet! This is one of my favorite design features.

Some of the features I love about the closet are the size. It has plenty of room for everything you can imagine. There is plenty of drawer space in the island and a built in dresser in between the hanging sections.

This definitely makes it easier to store things and keep eventing organized. I also like how much space there is to hang everything. There is plenty of space for long and short hanging items.

The Closet Inside the Closet

The closet has a smaller closet inside the larger closet. I absolutely love this about the design. Its the perfect place to store seasonal items and other things that aren’t as pretty. I use this space to store all my workout type clothing and shoes. I have them all sectioned out within the space too. All my crossfit and yoga clothes are organized by type and color order on the bottom section and in the top section I have my soccer, skiing, and hiking clothes. In the long hanging section I have all my coats organized by color order. This makes it so much easier to find things. I also store luggage and other miscellaneous items in here.

Closet Organization Tip #1: Organize by Type of Clothing

One of the ways I keep organized in my closet it to put all my like items together. Here you can see I put all my skirts in one of the longer hang sections and dresses in another.

In the short hang section I have all my pants in one section and my tops in the other sections.

Closet Organization Tip #2: Organize by Color

Once I have everything organized by type, I organized by color. This makes it easier to find things and it also looks more appealing.

Closet Organization Tip #3: Use the Same Type of Hanger

Another thing I like to do to keep things organized and looking uniform is to use all the same hangers. My favorite are the no slip hangers. Using the same hangers throughout make everything look more tidy and uniform.

Closet Organization Tip #4: Purge Things You No Longer Wear

I think this is the hardest part for most people. I have a rule that when I bring something new into the closet, something has to go out. I don’t always discard the item immediately but I have a few drawers I use to place those items in and when they are full, I fill up a bag or two and donate them or give them away. This really helps me because it’s doable. If you don’t have extra drawer space you can use a bin or plastic bag and store in a corner until it’s full. When it’s full, that’s when it’s time to get rid of it!

Closet Organization Tip #5: Use Hooks to Hang Items

I like having hooks to hang items like your purses, scarves, and belts. These can be use to style the closet too. It’s also nice to be able to hang things up that you want to display like a pretty dress and they also come in handy when you’re packing for a trip or when you get home late at night and don’t feel like hanging up your coat right away.

What to do with your Shoes?

I am fortunate that I have a separate space for shoes. If you have the space, use the same organizational tips I’ve listed above. Sort by type and color and make sure you’re purging every so often too!

Here I’ve sorted out all my shoes into different types. I have all my wedges and summer casual shoes in one section, heels in another, boots on the bottom sections, and winter shoes and booties in another. Within those sections everything is organized by color.

Styling Tips for a Beautiful Closet Space

You can create a space that is beautiful but also organized and functional. Adding a ginger jar or vase with faux flowers is one thing that I always do if I have the space for it. Add some accessories too! I like using fashion books and empty shoe boxes to style the shelves and cubbys. Shoes and purses work great for this!

If you are limited on space add something decorative or colorful that makes you happy. I also like adding sentimental things like the silver dipped rose my husband gave me for our 25th wedding anniversary. I put it in a little glass vase and every time I see it it reminds of that special day.

You can also add some pretty bottles of perfume and accessories that display as well as organize your jewelry.

There are so many little design and styling touches you can add to your closet to make it beautiful. I like using my purses and handbags to style the shelves. Adding an ottoman or island in your closet is a nice touch if you have the space. It’s also great to have a place to sit down when you’re putting your heels on or off!

I also have a desk in my closet which comes in handy and is a great place to display things too. I actually use this space sometimes to work on my blog as it’s quiet and away from all the noise and distractions in the main part of the house.

I should probably mention the leopard carpet. You either love it, or hate it!

Christmas Home Tour 2017 – Blue, Ivory, and Green Christmas

Welcome! Today I’m sharing all the decorations from our first Christmas at our Highland, Utah home. In our Christmas Home Tour 2017 – A  Blue, Ivory, and Green Christmas, we share all the details below. We have a lot of blue in our decor so I used varying shades of blue, ivory, and green in my decor. All the sources I am able to link will be at the bottom of the post.

EntryWay

I filled a metal container with faux greens and flowers and added two wreaths to the front door.

We added a painted pine cone pick and blueberry picks to the wreaths, then added light blue ribbon tied in a bow. I hung the wreaths with silver command strip hooks. Once you attach the hooks, let them sit for about twenty minutes before you hang the wreath.

The Living Room Tree

We layered green cedar picks, faux blueberry picks, an white frosted hydrangeas and wired them together to go on the tree. Then we wired them into the tree in one piece.

We used a variety of blue, ivory, and green ornaments.

There were a few other ornaments in the tree of varying colors and for the ribbon we wired long pieces together and then wired them into the tree.

The Living Room Mantle

The secret to creating a mantle like this is to start with command strip hooks. We then hung the base garland and attached it to the command strip hooks. It works best if you put the lights on and fluff the garland first.

Once the base garland was secure we added in different pine and cedar picks and then blueberry picks.

Last, we hung the stockings underneath the garland and placed the sign next to the mirror. We can’t leave out the reason for the season so that’s why I placed this sign where we could see it.

Family Room Tree

For the family room tree I used teal blue, brown, and ivory ornaments and a 7.5 flocked tree.

The Family Room Mantle

For the family room mantle we used a base green garland attached with command strip hooks then added frosted pine and frosted eucalyptus picks. Next we added frosted white berry stems and frosted magnolia flowers stems.

Last, we added a few more stockings, a silver star, and more blue and ivory ribbon.

Kitchen and Dining Room Decor

We attached these frosted berry wreaths to the backs of the barstool chairs with the same blue ribbon I used in the family room mantle and living room tree.

I added some fresh flowers in a silver vases to brighten up the kitchen.

The side counter is perfect for my hot cocoa bar in the kitchen.

My Christmas Tablescape

We created this beautiful centerpiece garland and was able to use it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Once the holidays are over, I take out all the Christmas decor out of the garland and you can leave the table unset with just the garland or you can set a new table that is winter themed. Either way this garland is very versatile.

I set the table with my light blue everyday dinnerware and added silver and green accents.

Throw pillows on the end chairs tie in all the green colors throughout the house.

Welcome to my home and thank you for joining me on this years Fall Home Tour -2019. I hope you enjoy these glimpses into my Highland, Utah home. I’ll link all sources and information at the bottom of the post.

Entryway and Front Porch Decor

I loved the pumpkin tower obelisks that I created last season so I decided to use them again with a slight change. Instead of using larger pumpkins at the base, I used small pumpkins and gourds. If you’d like to see last seasons decor post click here: Fall Home Tour -Highland House

I planted mums and other perennials in the pots with the pumpkin towers and flower pots by the front door.

Indoor Entryway

For the entryway I created a floral arrangement in a blue and white ginger jar with dark blue, burnt orange, and ivory flowers.

I bought these furry ivory pumpkins at Gatehouse No1 in Orem Utah. They are so soft!

The Living Room

I created another floral arrangement in another blue and white ginger jar to correspond with the one in the entryway and put it up on the mantle over the fireplace.

I changed out the throw pillows on the sofa for these inexpensive mustard colored throw pillows and restyled the coffee table.

Below are two versions of utilizing these beautiful ginger jars from Lauren Haskell Designs. In the first photo I used fresh flowers. In the second I used faux. I enjoy changing things up throughout the season.

Fall Home Tour -The Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home and its so much fun adding in some fall color into this space. The open shelves make it easy to change out my dishes for every season.

First, I tied four ivory berry wreaths to the backs of the barstools with some ribbon and added a vase filled with faux flowers to the island. I like using faux flowers because I can use them over and over again especially when certain flowers are not in season.

One of the reasons I like to decorate with the color blue is that it goes so well with everything. There are so many shades that you can use.

I tend to start adding things and then add more as we continue into fall. I like how I can use this darker blue as well as the lighter shade of blue with the orange.

I brought in some yellows and other fall colors this year that mixed well with the orange and blue. I really liked this antique vase I found at Highland Gardens and I filled it with flowers from Afloral. (I’ll share links and info below)

One of my favorite things to decorate for fall with is velvet pumpkins. I just love them! I have them in many colors and all around the house. One of my favorite things to use them in are my tablescapes and they also look great in a bowl or compote.

Pumpkin Tablescape

If you’ve followed me for awhile, you’ll know how much I love a beautifully set table. Every fall I like to make at least one pumpkin tablescape. I really loved last years pumpkin tablescape and wasn’t sure I could top it. I had planned to reverse the dishes from last year and add some other things that would make it different but when I was putting it all together, I had a thought to add the blue plates in with the orange. I think I like this one as much as I did last years! What do you think?

I had these fun paper placemats that I bought last year and they were a perfect match for the orange colored dishes.

For the garland centerpiece, I started with two base green garlands. I layered fall colored leaf stems, berry picks and sage greenery picks. Last I added in the blueberry picks and velvet pumpkins.

I also did a version without the bowls on top. Which do you like best? I like the bowls because it adds some height to the place-setting and make the blue the focus but I also like it without and the orange plates get to be the star. It is actually prettier in person. I don’t think my photos did it justice!

One of my favorite online Etsy shops is Teal Barn Signs. I love all the unique designs, colors, and sizes they offer. The inspiration behind this tablescape came from this pumpkin sign they sent me. (linked in the slider bar under sources as the bottom of the post)

Under the sign I added more velvet pumpkins and a metal can filled with faux leaf stems on top of an old crate.

Master Bedroom

I didn’t do a lot to the master bedroom except I added another blanket for warmth since the nights are getting colder. I also bought new sheets that were sea salt colored. I changed out the throw blankets and end blanket. I find rotating these type of things can give your room the feel of a mini makeover without breaking the bank.

Of course, I added velvet pumpkins and restyled the gold tray with them and a new sea salt glass vase and some green sage.

I added some new flowers and more velvet pumpkins on the dresser and night stands.

Guest Room

I refreshed the blue guest room with a beautiful bathrobe for guests to use when they come to stay. My favorite go to for cozy robes and throw blankets is Keiki Co.

It’s a nice addition to any guest room! I also added one to the grey guest room that is white and shorter. You have to check out their website to see all the great options and colors.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost here! My talented friends and I have been busy decking out our homes for the holidays, sharing recipes, and creating beautiful tablescapes to host our friends and family. We all love entertaining and hosting parties so we’ve put together another blog post for our “Holiday Hosting at Home” series. Today we are sharing what we’ve been doing over the past few weeks including some creative ideas for Christmas decor and tables. I also share a lasagna recipe that is a family favorite and great any time of the year.

Home with Holliday

Holliday created this beautiful Winter White Snowflake Christmas Table Setting for her neighborhood progressive dinner. She created a beautiful centerpiece out of fresh greens and added in hurricanes, silver sprays, winter white ornaments, and glittered white trees. Click here to see all the details. Next, Holliday created this second tablescape for another holiday party she was hosting and continued with the same snowflake-theme but mixed it up to coordinate with the mixed metallic color palette. To Have to Host

Lory created two different holiday tables. The first was for her husbands office party. She shares how there is something appealing about the way people in Scandinavia decorate for the holidays. Her Nordic Christmas Table is elegantly minimalist, yet still festive. I am part Danish and Swedish so this table really speaks to me. She used fresh greenery, twigs, branches, and antler candlesticks for the centerpiece. She finishes it off with some silver mercury glass votive candles. Next, Lory shares her White Winter Wonderland Bruch table that she created for a family gathering. She kept the decor neutral with lots of white and green making this a great tablescape of all season long. I am a big fan of creating something that can be used for an entire season. Lory is fortunate to live in Arizona where she can entertain outdoors all winter long. I love how she uses fresh greens, giant sugar pinecones, and white dinnerware. Home with Holly J

This past week I shared my Christmas Home Tour and how I decked out my Highland, Utah home for the holidays. I hosted a few parties including a progressive dinner and my first annual cookie exchange. Fall Home Tour – Highland House 2018

Welcome to my Fall Home Tour of the Highland House!!

I’ve been excited to share this fall home tour of the Highland house! I hope you’ll find inspiration here on how you can decorate your own home! I haven’t always had a nice home and I’m a big believer in creating beauty no matter what your home looks like. Whether it was the apartments I managed and lived in (with 3 kids) while my husband was in dental school or the Army housing we were assigned, I always tried to create a beautiful home with what limited money and resources I had at the time.

It just takes some creativity and some DIY to add some beauty to your home. One of the reasons I started sharing photos of my home was to create inspiration on how to make a house feel like a home. Creating warmth in my home has always been something I’ve enjoyed doing. I hope you’ll feel the warmth too! I tend to keep it simple on the fall decor. I am not a big Halloween decorator. Not because I don’t like it, but I’m too lazy and busy to do both fall and Halloween! I want to decorate for fall and call it good!

Front Porch and Entryway

For the front porch and entry, I hung two wreaths and added some mums and pumpkins. I found some rust colored obelisks, placed them in the flower pots and stacked pumpkins inside of them to make these cute pumpkin towers. I planted a few perennials to add some greenery around the the pumpkin towers.

Living Room

In the living room I took out the grey chairs and swapped them with the ivory colored spindle chairs. I took out the blush pink pillows and throws and added in the blue and ivory pillows and throws. Because my fall colors this year were blue and orange, I took out everything that would clash. I added in some blue and ivory velvet pumpkins and switched out the flowers to match.

Kitchen

In the kitchen I used faux flowers to create the blue and orange flower arrangements. I kept my blue everyday dishes out on the open shelves and pulled out my orange plates and pumpkin dishes for the opposite side. I used my light blue cake stands and serving dishes on the upper shelves and tied it all together with some orange and tan velvet pumpkins that I put in a raised wooden serving bowl. Using some wood tones brings a little bit of warmth to the white and gray tones in the kitchen.

The island is always fun to decorate.  I put one of the flower arrangements in the center on a wooden cutting board and tied orange berry wreaths around each of the bar stools.

Family Room

For the family room, I added an orange plaid blanket and some new blue blankets. Having a basket of cozy blankets warms up any space. I put a few more velvet pumpkins on the end table (sorry, you can’t see them from this angle).

Dining Room

For the dining room, I put some faux branches and flowers into an orange metal can and set it in the corner. Then I made the cutest pumpkin tablescape. For the tablescape I used my tan dishes with little pumpkins on them and to add some color and contrast I used orange salad plates. I used brown, tan, and orange velvet pumpkins and a large wooden pumpkin as a centerpiece. You can read more here about the pumpkin tablescape.

Master Bedroom

For my bedroom, I changed the top blanket to a satin champagne coverlet and salt blue comforter and changed out the throw blanket.

My Closet

I didn’t decorate my closet for fall but I did spruce it up a bit with some new books and a flower arrangement.
