Flower Farms of the Pacific Northwest Series Part Two – Purple Haze Lavender Farm

I’m so excited to be sharing another post on the Flower Farms of the Pacific Northwest Series. The farm I’m highlighting is called Purple Haze Lavender Farm and is a seven-acre certified organic lavender farm located in Sequim, Washington’s on the Olympic Peninsula.

Purple Haze Lavender Farm

There are so many lavender farms in this area but so far, Purple Haze has been my favorite one to visit. I met the owner last summer when I went for the first time and enjoyed visiting with him at the farm. The farm was recently sold and I hope the new owners will continue to keep it the same way!

The Beauty of a Lavender Farm

There are thousands of lavender plants to wander amongst at Purple Haze and there is a gift shop which features Purple Haze Lavender farm’s products. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and relax and for five dollars, you can cut your own bundle of lavender to take home. The smell of fresh lavender is magnificent!

The farm has many varieties of lavender and there is one variety that is pink!  Lavender is so beautiful, especially when it blooms. The best time of year to see it blooming is mid July to early August. I typically go during that time frame so I can see the fields in full bloom. There is a lavender festival every July in Sequim.

Have you ever seen lavender close up as it’s blooming? Its so pretty. I blew this photo up so you could see the detail more clearly. All these photos were taken in July of 2020 at Purple Haze Lavender Farm. The owner was so gracious and gave me a private tour of the farm and gardens. I went back again this summer but missed seeing it in full bloom. It was still beautiful though and you can see the reel video I made from this years visit on my Instagram @homewithhollyj

Purple Haze also allows you to walk in the lavender fields are are very generous with how they allow everyone to experience the farm. There are some great opportunities for photos here too.

There is no charge to visit the farm and there is ample parking. There are also some farm animals including a peacock and lots of cute chickens.

The farm also has a beautiful garden full of flowers and vegetables. When I went last year, the owner had planted all his vegetable plants in straw bales. I was totally fascinated by this. He told me that the plants do amazing planted this way and by the end of the season, they are just small clumps on the ground. I’m going to have to try this method sometime!

Other Things to do in Sequim and the Olympic Peninsula.

Check out John Wayne Marina nearby. I took this photo while visiting last summer.

Our favorite place to eat in Sequim is called The Oak Table Cafe. They have the best pancakes I’ve ever had that are made with a sourdough starter. Everything is delicious though!

Sequim also has a farmers and artisans market on Saturdays, May thru October from 9am to 3 pm and located at the City Hall Plaza. The downtown area is charming with a lot of cute shops and some great places to eat.

This is the Dungeness Spit and is near Sequim and the views of  the Straight of Juan De Fuca are incredible. This is a state park and you can hike down to the ocean for these views. That is Canada off in the distance in the top left of the picture.

Sequim is also located in the Olympic National Forest’s rain shadow and receives way less rain than the rest of western Washington. It’s the cutest town and so worth the drive or a ferry ride from Seattle.

“At Purple Haze in the summer we welcome you to wander our lavender fields, enjoy a scoop of lavender ice cream, and shop in either of our two stores-one of which is located on the farm itself  and the other one which is located in downtown Sequim at 127 W Washington Street.  During our “winter” months only our Downtown gift shop location remains open.  However, we always welcome visitors to enjoy the farm and then if you wish to shop just stop at our store downtown and we will be happy to help you with your lavender purchases.  Our store in Downtown Sequim is OPEN year round Tuesday-Friday 9-5, Saturday 10-5 and Sundays 12-4.  Pets are always welcome at the farm!”

Lavender and White Easter Tablescape

We have become good friends after finding each other on Instagram! Holliday loves entertaining and setting a beautiful table as much as I do. We are so alike it’s crazy! It’s so hard to believe that we will most likely be celebrating Easter without all our extended family due to social distancing and stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s not looking like we will be able to attend church services on Easter Sunday or gather with our large family for Easter dinner. I know we will make the best of it and find a way to make it a special day. No matter what happens though, one thing is for sure! My Easter table will be set and ready to host whoever is here with us.

I have really been on a lavender kick lately! I keep finding the most beautiful lavender-colored dishes which inspired this Lavender and White Easter Tablescape. I bought these Anthropologie plates over the summer and have been waiting for the right time to use them. I think you’ll love this tablescape just as much as I do.

The Inspiration for this Tablescape

What inspired this Lavender Easter Tablescape? Two reasons! First. it’s Easter (and spring) and a perfect time to use this color combo, second, I had another tablescape photoshoot using these lavender and white poppy dishes for a collaboration I was doing for a ceramic company. I figured I’d get the most out of the centerpiece arrangement I made for that photoshoot.

Look at the flowers on the dishes I received from Bico Ceramics! The anemones look very similar to their Poppy dishes. These dishes are out of stock at the moment but when they are back, I’ll link them here for you!

I was able to get some fresh anemone flowers from my friend Amy’s beautiful flower farm while I was home in Washington. These flowers look very similar to the flowers on the dishes. (Laughing Goat Flower Farm)

Amy is a dear friend of mine and her farm is near my other home in Washington. She cut the anemones the morning I was flying back to Utah and I carried them on the plane with me for my shoot the next day. I was so happy that they lasted long enough for me to create and photograph this Easter tablescape. It’s such a blessing to have a friend who grows amazing flowers and shares them with you. My photo doesn’t do either the dishes or the flowers justice!

Okay! Now back to the tablescape! I just had to share a few of those photos of the other table!

The Centerpiece

I created an asymmetrical centerpiece for the middle of the table using the anemones from Amy’s farm and then filled in the rest with store-bought flowers.

Since my table is so large, it can feel a little empty in the middle with just one large centerpiece. To fill in the space some, I pulled out some artificial greenery and layered it on either side of the centerpiece. I then added a few faux flower stems to it. Can you tell the difference between the fresh and faux flowers? I often mix fresh and faux flowers depending on what I’m doing and if what I need isn’t in season. The good thing about faux is they never die and you can use them many times over if you take care of them and store them properly. I still prefer fresh flowers of course, but sometimes you just use what you have!

Lastly, I added the white Easter sign from Krumpets Home Decor in the middle of the table and tucked some small white ceramic bunnies throughout the garland. I then added these bunny salt and pepper shakers on either end of the table. Right when I was finished setting the table and getting ready to photograph it, the rustic candlesticks I had ordered from Magnolia arrived! Just in time! I love how they tie into the rustic silverware I used.

I forgot to mention the table runner! It’s actually two of them! (HomeGoods) My table is so long that I have to buy two of them usually so that they hang over the edge. You don’t have to have them hang over the edge though and one will work too. I just like to change it up and these lace table runners are so pretty. Another white element in the table to compliment the lavender dishes and tie into the charger and napkin rings.

The Place-setting

The dishes are from Anthropologie (linked below~~ the photos are incorrect in the source section so just click through the photos that look like multi-colored napkins) and they are even more stunning in person. I started with a white wood charger then layered the dinner and salad plate on top.

You can see the details of the plates in this close-up shot. I love how the white charger compliments the dishes. I used my silver rustic silverware which goes so nicely with the rustic reclaimed wood table and candlesticks. To make it Easter themed, I used these adorable bunny ear napkin rings from Krumpets Home Decor. I love how the napkin ring is flat on the bottom so it stands up once you slide the napkin in and this is one fun element that the kids will love! How cute are these?

The Easter Tablescape that Transitions to a Spring Tablescape

One thing I always try to do when decorating for any holiday is to decorate for the season too. I try to create my tablescapes to be versatile to save time and expense. I’ll create a garland centerpiece for the table for Spring and then I’ll add different items into the garland for Easter. When Easter is over, I can take out the Easter decor and leave it as is for Spring or I can change up the dishes or napkins for Mother’s Day. So many possibilities!

Here’s an example of one I did for Spring, St. Patrick’s Day, and Mother’s Day! This is one of my favorites! This one here is one I made for Winter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day! I created eleven different tablescapes with the same centerpiece garland!

Also, here are some other tablescapes I’ve created that all have a lavender theme. I didn’t realize how much I liked lavender until I noticed how much I’ve used it in my tablescapes this past year. I created this first one for a Yankee Candle collaboration in the fall but this would work perfectly for Easter and Spring too!

One last lavender-themed tablescape! I set this table in my backyard at my home in Washington last summer when I hosted a dinner party for my girlfriends. I absolutely love lavender season and look forward to it every summer! I dream of creating a beautiful outdoor tablescape in a lavender field somewhere. Since I wasn’t able to do that this summer, I was inspired to create this Lavender and Mint Green tablescape for a luncheon I was hosting at my home.

I had planned this tablescape out in my head for months and just before I was ready to start putting it together, Yankee Candle Company reached out to me and asked if I would like to use their new Dried Lavender and Oak candle from their Farmers Market Collection.

Of course, I was thrilled because I love using candles in my tablescapes. These candles not only look nice, they smell amazing. The timing of this couldn’t have been more perfect.

Lavender and Mint Green Place-Setting

For the place-setting I chose these hyacinth placemats. I like layering different textures and patterns and these worked perfectly. I used mint green scalloped dinner and salad plates and for the top plate these colorful lavender dessert plates.

I chose a bright lavender cloth napkin and the napkin ring matches the charger. For the flatware I used a simple sterling silver pattern. The clear crystal wine glasses mixed well with the vases in the centerpiece so that is why I chose them.

The Centerpiece

For the centerpiece, I decided to use fresh flowers and a mix of vases and greenery to fill up the center of the table. I like to keep the centerpieces lower on the table so you can converse with the people across from you. A centerpiece should enhance and bring beauty to the table but not interfere with your ability to engage with the other guests at your table.

First, I layered a few faux eucalyptus garlands thru the middle part of the table and on top of a burlap table-runner.

I filled a large clear glass vase with purple, lavender, and white flowers for the main centerpiece and then added two smaller vases filled with more flowers on each side. Creating height in the middle draws your eye to the centerpiece.

To fill in the rest of the center of the table, I nestled in small purple bud vases and filled them with the leftover flowers and then set the Dried Lavender and Oak Yankee Candles all throughout the garland.

Mixing Fresh and Faux Flowers and Greenery

I get asked often if it is okay to mix fresh flowers and greenery with faux flowers and greenery? I say YES! I do it all the time! The faux eucalyptus is easy to work with and lasts forever! I have invested in some quality faux garlands and I use them over and over. I chose to use fresh flowers in vases in this tablescape but you could use faux too!

The Dried Lavender and Oak Yankee Candles added the perfect accent to the tablescape!

Create a Simple Lavender Inspired Centerpiece

I love entertaining and there is nothing better than a warm summer night in the Pacific Northwest and having my girlfriends over for an outdoor dinner party. I created this simple lavender inspired centerpiece for a dinner party I hosted in my backyard a few weeks back.

For this dinner party, we were celebrating my sweet friend Gina’s birthday. I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare so I kept this one simple and sweet. One way to keep it simple is to create a centerpiece out of potted plants that you can purchase at a grocery store.

Choose a Theme or Color Palette

I always choose a theme or pick a color palette based on something I see that inspires me. When I was planning this party, I had gone to Trader Joe’s to see what flowers they had and to shop for ingredients for the food I was planning to make. As soon as I saw these potted lavender plants and the smaller flowering plants in purple and lavender containers, I knew what my theme was going to be. Fresh, locally sourced lavender plants along with some smaller purple and white flowering plants in varying shades were the perfect pairing.

I like to choose my color and then I vary the shades of that color, usually using 3 different shades. This also adds depth and character to any tablescape. Here I chose the color lavender for the centerpiece inspiration and then I’ve varied the shades of lavender and purple throughout.

Create Different Heights and Layers

When creating a centerpiece, you want something that is lower to the table so you can see your guests and converse during dinner. I chose two of the taller lavender plants to create some height and then I used the smaller containers of flowers to fill in-between the larger containers.

To add layers into the centerpiece, I added in some rustic candlesticks and some votive candles that were wrapped in burlap. This adds texture and variety to the centerpiece as well as fills in some of the gaps and holes. I also used a long, sheer, ivory colored table runner and I layered everything on top of.

Using a table runner is not required but it adds another layer of color and texture and helps fill up the middle of the table. I always use a corresponding color in the palette I’ve chosen for the table runner. The dinnerware has some cream or ivory shades and it ties in with the dinnerware.

The Place-settings – Lavender and Green

For the place-settings, I chose wicker placemats and wooden napkin rings that matched well with the brownish colors in the dinnerware. I used silver flatware and a solid green napkin that matched the salad plate. I like to stack different plates in different shades and match the napkin to the stack of dishes.

You can see in the dish stack that I also varied the shades of green I used. I did this in the centerpiece and in the dishes and tied them all together with some warmer rustic elements.

I picked the wine I was serving based on the color of the wine bottles. The wine bottles had purple labels so of course, those were the picks for the dinner party! I may be the only person that picks wine based on what the label looks like! My friends all liked the wine so I think it worked out!

I hope this simple lavender inspired centerpiece inspires you to host your own dinner party with your besties! One of the reasons I enjoy hosting these dinner parties is that it creates connections and memories. Life is too short to not connect with the people you care about and I enjoy taking the time to create something warm and inviting for my friends who lift and inspire me each day.

You don’t have to be a professional floral arranger or have any experience with flowers. This is something everyone can do. Just pick a theme or color palette and make a simple centerpiece out of store bought flower pots and be creative! Most importantly, take time to gather and cherish the moments with good friends and good food!

P.S. At the end of the evening, I sent each of the girls home with one of the smaller potted plants as as a little token of my appreciation for their friendship. Your centerpiece can also become a little gift!
