My Highland, Utah House – Sources

I get so many questions about all the finishes and furnishings in our Highland, Utah home so I’m finally sharing the details here! In this post I will list all the information that I have on the home. Many of the furnishings are no longer available but when I can link a source for something similar I will share that info or another option at the bottom of the post.

The Story Behind the Home

We purchased the home from Rachel and Drew Parcell in July of 2016. Rachel is a fashion blogger and I had started following her on Instagram just before we bought the house. When I first saw one of her posts showing her house, I had thought it was a house I had seen in another Utah neighborhood years before called Stonegate. I even had pictures in my phone of this other home and didn’t realize they were different until I compared the photos.

The original house that the Highland house was inspired by was designed by designer Desiree Ashworth and has been featured in many magazines and blog posts. Drews parents used to live next door to the Stonegate house (so I hear) and they drew their inspiration for this home from the original french country style home. There are many of the same finishes and designs in the home and some very different, but both homes are stunning. We love that we were able to purchase the home from the Parcells. It was actually Rachel that inspired me to start blogging and she was very supportive. She warned me how much work it was and boy was she right!! I had no idea what I was getting myself into.  She was the first person to see my blog before it was published in July of 2018. I’ve loved blogging and sharing all things “home” here and on Instagram but it is a lot of time and work. Overall though, I’ve loved the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made and I’ve learned A LOT over the past two years!

Rachels husband Drew built the home and he built their current home after selling this one to us. We have loved living in Utah part time as it allows us to see our children more often as they have all lived there off and on while in college. We live just outside of Seattle the rest of the time.

Paint Sources:

My most asked question about the house is what color is the walls and white cabinets and trim!

Wall Color: Benjamin Moore Ashwood

Trim and Cabinets: White Dove

Exterior:

The home is 100% limestone from Texas. I do not know the trim color of the house but if and when I find out, I’ll update it here.

The front doors are painted with a glazed finish. I do not have the source of the doors but I know they are from a door company in Utah.

Windows:

The windows are wood clad windows and the paint color is custom. The window contractor told me they are from Windsor Windows out of Des Moines, Iowa and they made up a name for the blue window color- Windsor Blue Green. It’s a powder coat paint finish. Engineered Walnut floors. The type I have is no longer being made.

Bedrooms

We have 6 bedrooms. I’ve named them by color!

Master Bedroom

The wallpaper is grass cloth and the walls are Benjamin Moore Ashwood. Trim is White Dove. The carpet is wool and I’m not sure of the name or brand. To see more details on the Master Bedroom click here:

The Blue Room

The Blue Room has wall paper in it that was put in by the previous owners. I had the source at one point but last I checked it had been discontinued. For more details on the Blue Room Room click here.

The Blue Room and The Gray Room have a jack and jill bathroom between them. Here are some photos of that room. Wall color is Benjamin Moore Ashwood and trim is White Dove.

The Gray Room

The paint colors are the same as noted above and are the same throughout the house. BM Ashwood and White Dove is the trim. To see more details on this room click here to see the Gray Room

There is also the Pink Room which I haven’t taken any photos in yet and the Black Room which I haven’t shown yet either.

Fifty Shade of Gray Guest Room Reveal

I’m so excited to finally be sharing another one of the bedrooms at the Highland, Utah house.

I decided to title this post Fifty Shades of Gray Guest Room Reveal because there are so many different shades of gray and, it’s just like the Blue Room, which I shared earlier this year, in that there are many shades of blue.  (Click here to see Fifty Shades of Blue Room Guest Room Reveal)

The Bedding

I layered the bedding by using dark gray sheets, a lighter gray blanket, and a white comforter.

I like using a lot of throw pillows and throw blankets. I also used pillow shams that match the comforter.

It gets cold here in Utah so I like using a lot of layers during the winter months and when it gets warmer in the summer, the comforter can be folded down.

I also used a bed skirt on the bottom to cover up the bed frame.

My FAVORITE sheets and blankets to use are from Cozy Earth Bedding.

The bamboo sheets and blanket are the softest sheets I’ve ever found and they help regulate temperature while you sleep.

I have a set of the white sheets and a white blanket that I like to use that’s under the more decorative comforter. They are linked here (sheets), here (comforter), here (duvet)

Furniture

When we bought the Utah house in 2016 I knew we’d have a lot of company so I needed to get beds right away.

I already had a set of full sized mattresses so I bought this upholstered headboard online and it arrived just in time.

I had a lot of rooms to furnish in the house and I didn’t want to spend a lot of this room. The headboard and frame were under $350!

I brought the ottoman bench at the end of the bed and the dresser from the Washington house and they matched perfectly. (both Homegoods)

I still needed nightstands and some lamps and found some for a great deal at Osmond Designs Furniture.

I kept my eye out for some lamps and found these at Homegoods as well as the mirror over the dresser and some accessories for the room.

Window Treatment

When we bought the house there were no blinds in any of the rooms except the blue room.

When I priced out window treatments for the arched window, I was shocked at how much they were!

They had to be custom-made and are large windows and the best price I could find was around $1000!

Yikes.

The window blind in this room cost more than the entire bed and bedding! It took me about a year before I had blinds in all the bedrooms upstairs.

Accessories and Knick Knacks

One thing I love to use that adds warmth and color to any room is throw blankets and pillows.

I purposefully chose a white and grey neutral color palette because it’s so easy to change it up by changing those items out.

I recently added some pink into the room to give it a fresh look.

The ottoman at the end of the bed also has some extra blankets inside for when I want to change it up.

I added some picture frames with family photos, fresh flowers, a clock, ginger jar, and a basket full of yarn (someday I’ll get to crocheting a blanket with it) to add some coziness to the room.

I put the white wood mirror above the dresser and a basket full of towels for my guests to use.

We have so many guests come to stay so I have 3 sets of sheets that I rotate after guests come.

I store them in the closet of each bedroom so I can change them out quickly and easily after guests leave.

I also like to leave some nice scented soap in a dish for my guests next to the towels.

The Jack and Jill Guest Bathroom

There is a jack and Jill bathroom between the Gray and Blue guest rooms.

Each has it’s own sink and counter and the shower and toilet area are separate so two people can be using the bathroom at the same time.

Living Room

Today I’m sharing the parts of my home that I decorated for Christmas in the Highland home. Christmas is a special time of year and the tree is my favorite thing. I’ve always enjoyed decorating for the holidays and I love the warmth it creates in my home. At night when the tree is all lit up, there’s a special feeling that is created. Every year I look forward to decorating the house and creating memories with my family.

In the living room, I decorated my 10′ flocked long needle pine tree and used different shades of blue, silver, and ivory ornaments to match the other furnishings in the room. The mantle is a garland filled with blueberry picks, white hydrangeas and other greenery. It’s so pretty at night when all the christmas lights are on!

For the stair railing, I used a green garland on the stair rail and then wired ribbon into the garland. I added the same blueberry picks used in the tree and mantle. 

Kitchen and Dining Room

For the kitchen area, I wired the small wreaths onto ribbon wrapped around the barstools. For the island, I made a flower arrangement out of faux flowers and a mix of faux greens. I hung a simple wreath with the same ribbon above the stove on the hood. I put away my fall dishes and replaced them with some of my blue dishes. Having the different shades of blue on the open shelves goes well with the different shades of blue I used in all the Christmas decor.

I created the tablescape with my everyday blue dishes and silver accents. I made a garland with faux cedar, frosted eucalyptus picks and then placed silver ornaments and votive candles into it. 

Family Room

In the family room, I added in some green colors this year. I had a lot of green and brown ornaments that I didn’t use in the big tree so I found a way to use them on the smaller tree. For the tree, I used my slim, 6.5 flocked tree and filled it with green, white, and brown ornaments. I kept things more simple on this tree. For the mantle, I had to find a way not to block the TV and sound bar to keep my husband and boys happy. The solution was to drape the garland down a little in the middle. It’s not my favorite look, but it was a good compromise! The garland is a base green garland with frosted pine picks and white berries tucked in at an angle. Stockings are on one side and a few larger ornaments hang down on the opposite side. I just love Decorating For The Holidays.

Outdoor Decor

On the front door I used the same ribbon on the wreaths that I used indoors and added in some juniper berry picks to the wreaths. These were the same wreaths I used last year but with a few small changes, they look totally new!

I took out the pumpkins from the obelisks in the flower posts and filled them up with pine cones.  I added a wreath and some ribbon to the top and cut fresh juniper from the trees in my yard and filled that in around the base of the obelisks. I had to wrap wire around the obelisks to keep the pinecones from falling-out. Turns out they shrink when they get wet and cold! 

Entryway

In the entryway, I put more greenery in the big ginger jar, put up my “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” sign and added some reindeer and the gold merry christmas sign.

Hot Chocolate Bar

I make my own hot chocolate mix every year to give out as gifts to neighbors and friends. I also like to have a hot chocolate bar for anyone who wants a hot cup of cocoa now that its quite cold here in Utah!

Fall Home Tour – Highland House 2018

Welcome to my Fall Home Tour of the Highland House!!

I’ve been excited to share this fall home tour of the Highland house! I hope you’ll find inspiration here on how you can decorate your own home! I haven’t always had a nice home and I’m a big believer in creating beauty no matter what your home looks like. Whether it was the apartments I managed and lived in (with 3 kids) while my husband was in dental school or the Army housing we were assigned, I always tried to create a beautiful home with what limited money and resources I had at the time.

It just takes some creativity and some DIY to add some beauty to your home. One of the reasons I started sharing photos of my home was to create inspiration on how to make a house feel like a home. Creating warmth in my home has always been something I’ve enjoyed doing. I hope you’ll feel the warmth too! I tend to keep it simple on the fall decor. I am not a big Halloween decorator. Not because I don’t like it, but I’m too lazy and busy to do both fall and Halloween! I want to decorate for fall and call it good!

Front Porch and Entryway

For the front porch and entry, I hung two wreaths and added some mums and pumpkins. I found some rust colored obelisks, placed them in the flower pots and stacked pumpkins inside of them to make these cute pumpkin towers. I planted a few perennials to add some greenery around the the pumpkin towers.

Living Room

In the living room I took out the grey chairs and swapped them with the ivory colored spindle chairs. I took out the blush pink pillows and throws and added in the blue and ivory pillows and throws. Because my fall colors this year were blue and orange, I took out everything that would clash. I added in some blue and ivory velvet pumpkins and switched out the flowers to match.

Kitchen

In the kitchen I used faux flowers to create the blue and orange flower arrangements. I kept my blue everyday dishes out on the open shelves and pulled out my orange plates and pumpkin dishes for the opposite side. I used my light blue cake stands and serving dishes on the upper shelves and tied it all together with some orange and tan velvet pumpkins that I put in a raised wooden serving bowl. Using some wood tones brings a little bit of warmth to the white and gray tones in the kitchen.

The island is always fun to decorate.  I put one of the flower arrangements in the center on a wooden cutting board and tied orange berry wreaths around each of the bar stools.

Family Room

For the family room, I added an orange plaid blanket and some new blue blankets. Having a basket of cozy blankets warms up any space. I put a few more velvet pumpkins on the end table (sorry, you can’t see them from this angle).

Dining Room

For the dining room, I put some faux branches and flowers into an orange metal can and set it in the corner. Then I made the cutest pumpkin tablescape. For the tablescape I used my tan dishes with little pumpkins on them and to add some color and contrast I used orange salad plates. I used brown, tan, and orange velvet pumpkins and a large wooden pumpkin as a centerpiece. You can read more here about the pumpkin tablescape.

Master Bedroom

For my bedroom, I changed the top blanket to a satin champagne coverlet and salt blue comforter and changed out the throw blanket.

My Closet

I didn’t decorate my closet for fall but I did spruce it up a bit with some new books and a flower arrangement.
