Blue and Orange Pumpkin Themed Tablescape

Every year I like to create a pumpkin tablescape and this years came out completely different than I had planned it in my head. Blue was not in my original plan but as I was mixing and matching different dishes to see how they looked together I threw a blue plate in the mix just to see how it looked. The result was this blue and orange pumpkin themed tablescape!

As soon as I saw the blue against the orange, I knew I was changing my original plan. I have a lot of blue decor in my Highland, Utah home and my fall decor colors had a lot of orange colors mixed in so this worked out perfectly and matched my fall decor.

Two Different Versions

When I was setting the table, I had it set without the blue bowls. I liked it but then I added the blue bowls onto the table and I instantly liked it more. Here you can see each version. Which is your favorite?

Here you can see more of the orange and less blue. Either way I love the bright colors and how this tablescape came together.

One way you can determine how many plates you want use and whether you add a bowl or not depends on what you’re serving for dinner.

The Place-Setting

For my blue and orange pumpkin themed tablescape, I first started with the place-setting. I chose a teal blue charger and then alternated the blue and orange plates.

I wanted this pumpkin tablescape to be fun and not formal so I chose to use these paper placemats that came in a tablet. You just tear them off one at a time and they are super cute and affordable!

I used a light blue cloth napkin with these autumn leaf napkin rings and my everyday silver flatware.

The Centerpiece Garland

To create the centerpiece I layered two faux olive branch leafy garlands on top of a long burlap table runner.

Then I layered in faux fall colored leaf stems, blue and brown berry picks and a few faux sage picks on top of the two garlands. Then I nestled in some velvet pumpkins placing the largest one in the center and the smaller pumpkins in and around the garland.

Finishing Touches

I’m always about the details and adding simple things like matching salt and pepper shakers is one way I add an extra touch. I’m always on the hunt for cute salt and pepper shakers. I guess it’s safe to say that I collect them too! These cute copper and silver salt and pepper shakers matched perfect.

Another finishing touch and detail I added was the pumpkin sign on the wall in the dining room. Just underneath the sign I placed an orange metal container filled with more of the same leafy branch stems I used in the garland and placed it on top of an old antique crate.

One thing I enjoy doing is refreshing the master bedroom every so often without having to buy a lot of new furniture. Because my furniture is still fairly new, I just changed up the duvet, linens, pillows, and throw blankets. This is an inexpensive way to freshen up your room and add some new colors into your decor. Your bedroom should be a warm and cozy space that you want to spend your time in.

The Bedding, Linens, and Pillows

For the bed, I bought an inexpensive sea salt colored duvet cover for the top blanket, a new quilt to go at the end of the bed, and new euro shams. I added a few new throw pillows and a light colored throw blanket on the chaise lounge chair. I am always on the lookout for inexpensive pillows and throw blankets.

I decided to try some 100% organic cotton sheets from Doplnok. I had heard good things about them, and now they are my new favorite sheets! I love getting new sheets and climbing into my bed when they have been freshly laundered. These cotton sheets are sustainably sourced and of excellent quality and come in a variety of colors. Mine are champagne color and I like to use a neutral color that go with any of the bedding colors I have.

Add Some Flowers

Adding fresh or faux flowers is an inexpensive way to add beauty to your bedroom. I like to make my own floral arrangements but you can buy them already made if you prefer. You can find inexpensive ones at stores like Homegoods.

I filled a small vase with some pretty white faux flowers and placed them on a gold tray with a few books, candles, and some wooden beads. This small addition creates warmth in room and makes me want to curl up in the corner and read a book. The only thing missing is my cute fur babies on the bed!

I also made a larger arrangement in a pretty vase that I placed on the side of the dresser.

The Mattress and Spring Cleaning

Spring is the perfect time to turn your mattress if it needs rotating, wash the mattress cover, duvets, pillow covers, and to clean under and around the bed. Each spring I lift the mattress up and vacuum and dust under the bed and behind the furniture. It’s amazing how much dust accumulates under the bed and it feels so nice knowing its clean and all that dust is gone. I also have my carpets and rugs professionally cleaned.

Speaking of mattresses, we purchased an expensive pillow top mattress when we moved into the Utah house. The longer I slept on it, the worse I felt. I’d wake up in the morning and my shoulders hurt so bad I could hardly do my daily crossfit workouts. I had just started blogging and sharing my home on Instagram when I received an email from Sleep Frankly. They asked me if I would try one of their mattresses and give them a review. If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know that I will only share things that I actually like and that I honestly use. When I share something, it has to be because I love it and it’s added some value to my life. Frankly sent me some information on their mattress and I agreed to try it out. I told them I wouldn’t give it a great review unless it was a quality mattress and was everything they said it was.

A week later a box was delivered to my porch. I opened the box and was surprised that a mattress could fit in a box that small! With the help of my son, we switched out the pillow top mattress for the Frankly mattress.

To speak frankly,(no pun intended) I have an expensive memory foam mattress in my other home in Washington. It’s a great mattress but, it also cost over $13,000.00 and it had a chemical smell for the first 6 months that caused me to have an allergic reaction to it. It took me awhile to figure out it was the bed that was causing this reaction. My allergic reaction finally subsided about the time the chemical smell went away so I can only guess that was the cause. Anyhow, the reason I’m sharing this is that when the Frankly bed arrived, there was no chemical smell and the king size Frankly mattress costs $845.00! I was really impressed after my other experience with a memory foam mattress.

The memory foam mattress also came with a washable cover and looked exactly as shown in these photos. It was wrapped in plastic and easy to slide onto the bed. I kept my same box spring underneath.

The Frankly Mattress was a little more firm than I was used to but I gave it about three weeks to get used to it. Soon my shoulders were not hurting as much when I woke up and I was not tossing and turning all night. Before long, I realized that I was sleeping much better and my shoulders were back to normal.

I was impressed with the quality of the Frankly Mattress and how simple it was to have it delivered to my door and set up in about ten minutes. I keep a pretty hectic schedule and the thought of mattress shopping makes me cringe. I had never heard of a mattress in a box that’s delivered to your door and I’m grateful that Frankly asked me to review their mattress and to share my experience. I can honestly say that I love the mattress and if you’re in the market for one, definitely consider trying a Frankly Mattress. There is a 60-night trial period and easy returns if you decide it’s not for you and they have a 10 year warranty.

Adding Simple Accents Pieces and Rearranging

There are other simple things you can add or change up in your room to make it feel refreshed. Rearranging furniture is always an option. Sometimes just moving things around gives your room an entirely different look. Unfortunately, that isn’t an option in my room with all the windows and how the fireplace is situated.

Adding a bench to the end of the bed is an inexpensive way to refresh the room and it gives me a place to stack my pillows at night!

Placing a rug under the bed is another way to update your bedroom. The rug should be about three feet from the end of the bed and centered with the bed on the sides.

I wanted a chaise lounge chair in the corner and had been looking for the perfect one to go in that space. The one I chose had many fabric choices so before I picked a pattern, I ordered swatches of my top five fabric choices. This made it so much easier to decide once I could see them in person and up close to the other fabrics in the room. I chose a neutral fabric that would go well with the other colors in the room.  (Nobletex Platinum is the fabric on mine)

I searched forever for the perfect full length mirror and finally found this one. It arrived the day before I photographed my room for this post! It still needs to be hung on the wall but I had to sneak it into this post because I love it so much! Adding mirrors and artwork are a nice option to bring more color and beauty to your bedroom.

This Pink and Gray beautiful Easter Tablescape was so much fun!  Believe it or not, the inspiration behind this adorable table came from the bunny ear napkin rings and the gray easter bunnies.

The Place-Setting

For the place-setting I started with a gray and white round placemat. Next, I used off-white chargers, pink dinner plate, a white salad plate, and a smaller pink dessert plate.

For the napkin, I used a darker pink napkin with the bunny ear napkin ring and laid it sideways to showcase the napkin ring.

I chose gold rimmed glasses and gold flatware because the charger has some gold accents and tied all the layers together.

Some of the items are more formal and some are more whimsical. It was fun to mix some of these elements to create this charming and unique Easter table.

The Centerpiece Garland

For the centerpiece, I created a garland out of faux greenery on top of a pink ruffled table runner.

First, I laid a long garland on top of the table runner.

I then layered in faux eucalyptus stems and pink and white faux flowers. I chose to use peonies, roses, and apple blossom stems for the type of faux flowers.

There are some quality faux flowers that look so real you can’t tell the difference!

To complete the Easter table I nestled in some large pink metallic easter eggs into the garland and added the two large gray easter bunnies at either end.

This was such a fun table to create! I hope you enjoy it as well!

I really enjoy hosting parties and bringing people together. It’s just something I’ve always done, and I’m just wired that way.

When I moved to Utah, I picked a CrossFit gym that was close by and started going every day. The ladies at this gym were so warm and friendly and welcomed me with open arms. To show my appreciation months later, I invited them all to my home for lunch.

What transpired was something so special that I did not expect it! Everyone started sharing things that were deep and personal, and I realized that we had all bonded over some life experiences we all had in common. There were tears shed and expressions of love, understanding, and compassion for one another.

Since that time, we have gathered every so often and continued this tradition. One of my favorite memories of our first gathering was when I went to do the laundry the following day, and I noticed that all of the cloth napkins we’d used for lunch had makeup stains from when we were all crying.

It was a reminder of the tender moments when we shared some deeply personal things we had experienced in our lives. I smile as I think of that moment, and I am so grateful to be surrounded by such an amazing group of strong women.

I’ve come to love every one of these ladies, and so I was excited about hosting a Galentine’s Day party in honor of Valentine’s Day. I wanted it to be extra special. I decided to do a brunch because I wanted to make heart-shaped waffles and heart-shaped butter. My friend Summer Adams made heart-shaped waffles for me when I visited her in the fall, and I knew I had to make them for some type of Valentine’s celebration.

I hope you enjoy all the little details of this fun party, and I hope it inspires you to gather with those special gals in your life and share something meaningful with each other. Good friends make our lives richer in so many ways, so why not have a party to celebrate each other!!

Brunch for me is having both sweet and savory options. For the sweet, I made whole wheat heart-shaped waffles with heart-shaped butter, fresh fruit, and homemade coconut syrup. For the savory, I made sautéed red and Yukon gold potatoes with caramelized onions, scrambled eggs with onions, green and yellow peppers, heart-shaped bacon drizzled with maple syrup (a mix of sweet and savory), and of course, the chocolate cake and hot cocoa bar for dessert! For drinks, I served Jordan Winery’s 2015 white wine, sparkling cider, and Orange Juice.

The Cake

I really wanted to make a semi-naked cake for this party. I decided to make a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. I found these recipes on Pinterest and they were both great. I found these chocolate XOXO’s at Target and knew they’d be perfect for the top of the cake. I added pink spray roses and some eucalyptus to the top and bottom of the cake. I love how it turned out. Thank you to my friend Christina and my daughters cute friend Jensen both for helping me learn how to make this type of cake! I’ll do a separate post for this soon and share what I learned! It’s not as hard as it looks to make this type of cake. You just need to know a few of the tricks and techniques to create a stunning cake.

When I saw these white ceramic turkeys at Pottery Barn (linked at the bottom of the post) a few months back, I knew I wanted to create a tablescape around them.  I envisioned a rustic table for Thanksgiving with a green garland and some velvet pumpkins throughout.

I started with a tan linen table runner and layered faux green leafed stems, eucalyptus, and some smaller faux sage bunches.  I added in a few small white flower stems and some tan colored pinecone picks.

I used some rustic candlestick holders with white candles and some turkey shaped salt shakers. I also found some matching turkey place card holders that I’ll put place cards in when I have finalized the guest list for Thanksgiving.

For the places setting, I used light, neutral colors to create a rustic feel to the table. I used a pretty napkin to add some color and texture and rustic flatware.  I used my silver rimmed stemware that meshed perfectly with the other things on the table.

I filled the white turkey serving bowls with tan colored pinecones and used velvet pumpkins in varying colors throughout the garland.  If you look close you can see some tiny velvet acorns.

I added dark hunter green pillows to the end chairs to bring some more color in. With so many light, neutral tones, I wanted a little color at the ends of the table to tie into the green garland.

Fall Home Tour – Highland House 2018

Welcome to my Fall Home Tour of the Highland House!!

I’ve been excited to share this fall home tour of the Highland house! I hope you’ll find inspiration here on how you can decorate your own home! I haven’t always had a nice home and I’m a big believer in creating beauty no matter what your home looks like. Whether it was the apartments I managed and lived in (with 3 kids) while my husband was in dental school or the Army housing we were assigned, I always tried to create a beautiful home with what limited money and resources I had at the time.

It just takes some creativity and some DIY to add some beauty to your home. One of the reasons I started sharing photos of my home was to create inspiration on how to make a house feel like a home. Creating warmth in my home has always been something I’ve enjoyed doing. I hope you’ll feel the warmth too! I tend to keep it simple on the fall decor. I am not a big Halloween decorator. Not because I don’t like it, but I’m too lazy and busy to do both fall and Halloween! I want to decorate for fall and call it good!

Front Porch and Entryway

For the front porch and entry, I hung two wreaths and added some mums and pumpkins. I found some rust colored obelisks, placed them in the flower pots and stacked pumpkins inside of them to make these cute pumpkin towers. I planted a few perennials to add some greenery around the the pumpkin towers.

Living Room

In the living room I took out the grey chairs and swapped them with the ivory colored spindle chairs. I took out the blush pink pillows and throws and added in the blue and ivory pillows and throws. Because my fall colors this year were blue and orange, I took out everything that would clash. I added in some blue and ivory velvet pumpkins and switched out the flowers to match.

Kitchen

In the kitchen I used faux flowers to create the blue and orange flower arrangements. I kept my blue everyday dishes out on the open shelves and pulled out my orange plates and pumpkin dishes for the opposite side. I used my light blue cake stands and serving dishes on the upper shelves and tied it all together with some orange and tan velvet pumpkins that I put in a raised wooden serving bowl. Using some wood tones brings a little bit of warmth to the white and gray tones in the kitchen.

The island is always fun to decorate.  I put one of the flower arrangements in the center on a wooden cutting board and tied orange berry wreaths around each of the bar stools.

Family Room

For the family room, I added an orange plaid blanket and some new blue blankets. Having a basket of cozy blankets warms up any space. I put a few more velvet pumpkins on the end table (sorry, you can’t see them from this angle).

Dining Room

For the dining room, I put some faux branches and flowers into an orange metal can and set it in the corner. Then I made the cutest pumpkin tablescape. For the tablescape I used my tan dishes with little pumpkins on them and to add some color and contrast I used orange salad plates. I used brown, tan, and orange velvet pumpkins and a large wooden pumpkin as a centerpiece. You can read more here about the pumpkin tablescape.

Master Bedroom

For my bedroom, I changed the top blanket to a satin champagne coverlet and salt blue comforter and changed out the throw blanket.

My Closet

I didn’t decorate my closet for fall but I did spruce it up a bit with some new books and a flower arrangement.
