Summertime is here and as you may know, this is a time that I entertain constantly! No gathering is complete without a good, refreshing beverage and Homemade Root Beer is the way to go for a warm summer afternoon. This homemade root beer recipe is so easy for anyone to make and has only four ingredients! Don’t let your summer pass by without making this delicious, homemade root beer recipe.

Homemade Root Beer Recipe

The ingredients that you’ll need for this root beer recipe are cold water, sugar, Rootbeer Extract, and 2 Pounds of Dry Ice.

To make this homemade root beer recipe, you’ll set aside the dry ice and mix all of the other ingredients together in a large container until the sugar dissolves.

For this homemade root beer recipe, I’d recommend having a large container that you can take the top off because the smoke that the dry ice creates is really fun when it overflows the container!

Any brand of Rootbeer Extract will do. I like the McCormick brand, Durfee brand, and a local brand in Utah called Hires.

Once you’ve mixed those ingredients together, taste your mixture to see if you need to add more sugar or extract and add to your liking.

Next is the time to add the dry ice, note that when working with dry ice you’ll want to use insulated gloves or tongs to transfer it and avoid touching it with your bare hands, or else it’ll burn your skin.  Add it to the root beer in a well-ventilated area so the carbon dioxide doesn’t build up and don’t let children (or adults) inhale the fog spilling from the pitcher. Be careful when breaking it up into pieces. I break mine into about 3-4 inch pieces for this root beer recipe.

For the Dry Ice, it’s best to buy what you need and use it quickly after purchasing since it won’t last very long, I usually buy mine the day of.

Once added, Stir with a long-handled spoon to prevent the dry ice from sticking to the bottom and sides of the container. The root beer will start to bubble and the dry ice will start to carbonate the root beer.

Stir every few minutes until the dry ice is mostly melted (this should take around 15 minutes according to the root beer recipe).

• 3 tbsp Rootbeer Extract
• 2 pounds Dry Ice Broken into Pieces

Instructions

• In a large glass container, mix together the water, sugar, and root beer extract and stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Taste it to see if you need more extract or sugar.
• Use gloves to protect your hands or you can use large tongs and carefully add the dry ice to the glass container. Stir with a long-handled spoon to prevent the dry ice from sticking to the bottom and sides of the container. The root beer will start to bubble and the dry ice will start to carbonate the root beer.
• Stir every 3-4 minutes until the dry ice is mostly melted, 10-15 minutes.

Notes

 Using Dry Ice: While dry ice is safe to drink once it is completely melted in the root beer, keep in mind there are a few safety precautions to follow when working with it: use insulated gloves or tongs to transfer. Never touch it directly as it can burn your skin. Add it to the root beer in a well-ventilated area so the carbon dioxide doesn’t build up and don’t let children (or adults) inhale the fog spilling from the pitcher. Be careful when breaking it up into pieces. I break mine into about 3-4 inch pieces.

How to Store: Because dry ice evaporates quickly and doesn’t store well, it’s best to buy only what you need and use it as soon as possible (store it in a styrofoam cooler if not using it right away as it is best not to keep it in every day freezers). I buy mine the day I plan to use it.

I typically double the batch depending on how many people I am serving.

• 4 Fresh Limes
• 1/2 cup Simple Syrup Homemade or Store-Bought
• 2 cups Ginger Beer non-alcoholic
• 1 cup Sparkling Water
• Ice Cubes
• Lime Slices and Fresh Mint Leaves for Garnish

Instructions

• Step 1: Prepare the Lime Juice Start by juicing the 4 Fresh Limes. Roll them gently on the countertop to release more juice. Cut the limes in half and use a citrus juicer or your hands to extract the juice. Strain the juice to remove any seeds or pulp, and set it aside.

• Step 2: Create the Simple Syrup In a small saucepan, combine equal parts of water and sugar. Heat the mixture over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the simple syrup to cool down. You can also buy Simple Syrup at the grocery store if you don't want to make your own.
  1/2 cup Simple Syrup
• Step 3: Mix the Mocktail Take a copper Moscow Mule mug or a tall glass and fill it with ice cubes. Add the fresh lime juice to a pitcher, followed by the 1/2 cup Simple Syrup. Stir well to ensure the flavors blend together perfectly.
• Step 4: Add the Ginger Beer Pour in the 2 cups Ginger Beer, which brings the signature spiciness to the mocktail. Stir gently to incorporate all the ingredients evenly.

Sundaes on Sunday Party Idea

Have you heard of Sundaes on Sunday? It’s a fun way to gather your neighbors, friends, and family together on a Sunday. You’ve probably figured out by now that this involves ice cream! For this little “Sundaes on Sunday” gathering, I made homemade ice cream in my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker from Walmart and homemade root beer for root beer floats! Keep scrolling to see a few Walmart Summertime Party Essentials you’ll need for entertaining.

Both recipes are easy to make and you can never go wrong with homemade ice cream….. if you haven’t had homemade root beer before, you’re in for a treat! Of course, you can always buy ice cream and root beer too! If you decide to make homemade ice cream, you can make some ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the freezer. If you decide to make the homemade root beer, you need to do that the day off and allow a few hours before the party.

My husband takes his ice cream making very seriously and he will make multiple batches and different flavors. We kept it simple for this particular gathering and only made vanilla-flavored ice cream but, here are some of our favorite add-ins that you can mix into the vanilla recipe: Strawberry is my personal favorite!

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

Ingredients

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
• 1¼ cup whole milk
• ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
• 2 tsps vanilla extract

Instructions

• Mix all ingredients into a medium sized mixing bowl and whisk until all ingredients are combined well.
  1 cup heavy whipping cream, 1¼ cup whole milk, ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk, 2 tsps vanilla extract
• Pour mixture into ice cream maker. Set ice cream maker per instructions and start making the ice cream.
• When the ice cream is ready, transfer to an airtight, freezer safe container and freeze for up to one week.
• You can add other flavorings to the mixture too (chocolate, strawberries, or anyting you like) This vanilla recipe is a great base for other flavors.

Craig’s tips and tricks for making homemade ice cream:

The ice cream comes out soft serve so if you want it more frozen and scoop-able, put it in the freezer for at least two hours. We typically make ours a day ahead so that it’s nice and frozen.

Here are some of our favorite add-ins. You can add any of these to the basic vanilla recipe mixture. You add all of these to the ice cream mixture.

Crushed Oreos for cookies and cream. (we like the thin Oreos)

Butterfinger Candy Bar (crush up 1-2 candy bars)

Heath Bar (crush up 1-2 candy bars)

 Fresh Strawberries (pureed and add Hershey’s strawberry syrup to taste)

Chocolate (add chocolate syrup to taste)

Mint Chocolate Chip (peppermint extract, mini dark chocolate chips, or mint Oreos, and you can add green food coloring if you want to make it green)

Setting up for the Sundaes on Sunday Party

This a really fun and easy gathering to set up. I found all the items I needed to host this gathering at Walmart Home. They have so many great summer entertaining items that make hosting at home so easy. I’ll link all the items I used to create this table at the bottom of the post. Walmart Home now has a new section called Wow and Now where you can find so many great things for your home that are trending and great price points. Walmart’s Wow and Now section is the perfect place to shop for items that make hosting summer parties and family gatherings easy.

There are so many great things about hosting this type of party. The first is that everyone can serve themself whenever they want. Second, everyone can mix and mingle and spend time catching up and if it’s your neighbors, it’s a great way to get to know each other better. This is the perfect gathering that’s simple and easy to put together to welcome a new family into your neighborhood or for a summertime block party.

Here’s what you’ll need to host your own Sundaes on Sunday gathering:

Ice Cream Maker (if you prefer to make your own)

Root Beer (homemade or store-bought)

Root beer Mugs, I put them in the freezer and pulled them out when it was time to start.

Drink Dispenser for the Root Beer

Bowls for the Ice Cream Sundae toppings

Toppings for the Sundaes: I had caramel, hot fudge, nuts, and sprinkles, but you could have bananas, whipped cream, cherries, or whatever you prefer. I only had a few toppings to choose from since I also had the option to make a root beer float but, you can do it however it works for you.

Mugs or bowls for the sundaes. I used mugs to change things up.

This Pink Party Punch has been a staple at many of the parties I’ve thrown over the years. It’s simple to make and packs a punch (pardon the pun)! I’ve made this party punch for baby showers, bridal showers, summertime BBQs, family gatherings, birthdays, and more. It goes well with any occasion and is a great summertime poolside drink! Here, I made the pink party punch for a PIE-oneer Day Party I hosted for a Utah state holiday.

Summertime or Anytime Punch

Everyone that’s had this pink party punch at any of my gatherings has asked for the recipe, so I am finally getting around to sharing it. It’s very easy to make, and you can substitute a variety of things depending on what you have on hand or can buy at the store. I will share some of the variations in my helpful hints below.

Use this recipe anytime of the year or for any gathering you have.

Pink Party Punch

A refreshing party punch that can be served at any party or gathering and is perfect for summertime entertaining or any poolside party!

Ingredients

• 1 can frozen limeade concentrated drink mix
• 1 can frozen raspberry lemonade concentrated drink mix
• 1 container powdered lemonade drink mix 19 oz (I use country time)
• 2 2 liter bottles of sprite or 7-up (or any generic brand is fine)
• 1 bag ice (I buy a bag at the grocery store)
• 2 lemons (sliced)
• 2 limes (sliced)
• 1 cup frozen raspberries

Instructions

• In a large punch bowl or drink dispenser add the 1 can frozen limeade concentrated drink mix, 1 can frozen raspberry lemonade concentrated drink mix, 1 container powdered lemonade drink mix 19 oz, and 2 2 liter bottles of sprite or 7-up. Stir until the powdered drink mix is dissolved and everything has mixed together well.
  1 can frozen limeade concentrated drink mix, 1 can frozen raspberry lemonade concentrated drink mix, 1 container powdered lemonade drink mix 19 oz, 2 2 liter bottles of sprite or 7-up
• Slice the 2 lemons and 2 limes and add those and the 1 cup frozen raspberries to the punch mix.
  2 lemons, 2 limes, 1 cup frozen raspberries
• Dump in about 1/2 to 3/4ths of the ice. If there's room in your punch bowl or container, you can add more of the ice.
  1 bag ice
• The punch is very strong when you first mix it up but some of the ice will melt and dilute it a bit until it tastes perfect.

Helpful Tips and Variations

[holly_healthful_tips] *You can substitute any kind of frozen lemonade, pink lemonade, or limeade. I usually just buy what the store has but my favorite combination is the pink lemonade and limeade. You can do two of the same as well. They all work! *If you can’t find the country time powdered lemonade mix, you can use the pink lemonade mix or a generic brand if it’s available. *I usually double this recipe depending on how many people I have coming but this recipe makes quite a lot and depending on how much your guest drink it can serve anywhere 20-30 people. It’s easy to mix a second batch right in the punch bowl or drink dispenser. *I add about half the ice in and then add more if needed. It’s a little strong at first and the ice will dilute it down. * The sliced lemons, limes, and raspberries are optional and give the punch some color. *You can add sherbet ice cream to this and it becomes a frappe! *Feel free to vary this recipe! I do it all the time and it always comes out great! [/holly_healthful_tips]
