Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting my friend’s farm, surrounded by blossoming cherry trees, and it instantly reminded me of one of my all-time favorite recipes: homemade cherry crisp using fresh cherries.

Cherry crisp, or as some may call it, cherry crumble, holds a special place in my heart. Its simplicity and irresistible flavor make it a go-to dessert for any occasion, whether it’s a summer barbecue, a cozy family dinner, or simply a sweet treat to enjoy on a warm evening. And as summer draws near, I couldn’t resist sharing this family recipe with you all.

Cherry Crisp Recipe

Homemade Cherry Crisp

This Cherry Crisp, or some might call it a crumble, is super easy to make and so delicious. Serve it up warm with some vanilla ice cream and you'll be everyone's favorite person!

Ingredients

• 4 cups tart pie cherries fresh or frozen
• ½ cup sugar
• 1 cup softened butter
• 1½ cup flour
• 1½ cup oatmeal
• 1½ cup brown sugar
• 1 tsp salt
• 3 tsp almond extract
• non-stick spray or coconut oil

Instructions

• Place 4 cups tart pie cherries fresh or frozen (can be frozen or thawed) in a mixing bowl. Add ½ cup sugar and 3 tsp almond extract and stir gently until the sugar is mixed in well.
• Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick spray and then dump the berries into the baking dish. Spread the cherries out to cover the bottom of the pan. Set aside.
• Preheat the oven to 350°
• In another mixing bowl, combine the 1 cup softened butter, 1½ cup flour, 1½ cup oatmeal, 1½ cup brown sugar, and 1 tsp salt. Use a pastry cutter or your hands to mix the crumbled topping together. You'll want the pieces of butter to be pea-sized if possible.
• Dump the crumbled topping on top of the cherries in the baking dish and cover the cherries with the crumbled ingredients evenly. It's okay if some of the cherries are sticking out or if it doesn't go all the way to the edge of the pan.
• Bake at 350° for approximately 30 minutes. The juice from the cherries will bubble up around the edges.
• Let cool for 10-15 minutes and then serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

If you want to use blueberries, raspberries, marion berries or peaches, omit the almond extract and use 2 tsp of cinnamon instead. 

For apples, use green tart apples and follow the recipe as is. 

Make sure you serve warm with vanilla ice cream! 

If you like the crumble topping, you can always double that part of the recipe!

Delicious Salted Caramel Chocolate Trifle Recipe

Today I’m sharing another Trifle recipe! After sharing the Strawberry Lemon Trifle recipe a few weeks ago, many asked me to hurry up and share the others. This Salted Carmel Chocolate Trifle was also a big hit when I made this (and three others) for my niece’s bridal shower a few years back.

This delicious Salted Caramel Chocolate Tripe recipe is super easy to make! You can go all out and bake everything from scratch or you can use store-bought mixes like I did.

Trifles are one of the easiest desserts you can make, especially when you’re in a time crunch or need something fast and easy to make that also tastes amazing.

You can literally add anything into a trifle so be creative! I made this recipe up on the fly and I think it was the favorite for the chocolate lovers and rivaled the Strawberry Lemon Trifle I made the same day.

If you have never heard of a trifle dessert here is what it is:

The traditional version of trifle that originated in England in the 18th century (with less similar dishes being made even earlier) consisted of three or four layers, including some sort of fruit, alcohol-soaked sponge cake, and custard. The fruit and cake were often layered with homemade jelly. This classic interpretation was always served in a round bowl.

American trifles are similar but fortunately, a bit less complicated. They consist of multiple layers of crumbled or cubed cake, pudding, and fruit.

The flavors can vary widely, from raspberries, peach yogurt, and angel food cake to brownies, white chocolate pudding, and candy bar bits.

They’re topped with whipped cream and some sort of crumbs or nuts to add texture.

Trifle should be served in a deep, round dish—ideally one that’s clear so diners can see all of the layers.

So really a trifle is a bunch of goodness all in the same bowl! How’s that for my own definition? You can really add in anything you like or have on hand. You could even add in some vanilla-flavored pudding to balance out all the chocolate. 

For this Salted Carmel Chocolate Trifle, I used a box of chocolate cake and baked it on a sheet cake pan. After it cools off, cut the cake into 1-2″ bite-sized pieces. 

Next, I added the cake to the bottom of my trifle dish and then drizzled some of the salted caramel over the cake. Then I made a box of jello instant chocolate pudding and then mixed them together. I added in a layer of this pudding mixture over the cake and caramel.

 

I then repeated the same layers then topped it off with more Cool Whip, salted caramel, and some shaved chocolate from a chocolate bar.

Ingredients

• 1 box small jello instant chocolate pudding (prepared) + 2 cups milk
• 1 large container cool whip
• 1 jar salted caramel
• 1 box chocolate cake mix prepared as directed (eggs, oil, water)
• 1 bar chocolate

Instructions

• Prepare and bake a 1 box chocolate cake mix prepared as directed. Set aside to cool.
• When the cake has cooled, cut the cake into 1-2" pieces.
• Prepare 1 box small jello instant chocolate pudding (prepared) mix as directed and then add in 3/4 of the container of Cool Whip and mix together until well blended. Reserve the remainder of the cool whip to top the trifle at the end.
• In a trifle bowl or dish, layer the chocolate cake pieces onto the bottom and then drizzle some of the salted caramel on top of the cake.
• Next, add a layer of the pudding/cool whip mixture.
• Repeat the layer steps 1-2 more times until your trifle bowl is almost full.
• Once the layers are complete, top the trifle with the remainder of the cool whip and drizzle more salted caramel on top.
• Use a small cheese grater or zesting grater and shave off some of the chocolate bar on top for garnish.
• Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

Easy and Delicious Strawberry Lemon Trifle Dessert

If you’re looking for a delicious and easy dessert recipe to make for your next family gathering or party, try my Strawberry Lemon Trifle recipe.

It’s one of my go-to recipes whenever I host a baby or bridal shower and is always a hit no matter when I serve it. Everyone asks me for the recipe so I’m finally sharing it!

What is a trifle?

It’s a layered dessert that’s so easy to make.

This dessert has been around for hundreds of years and originated in England. It is layers of cake, fruit, and a mixture of pudding and whipped cream. If you have a cake that sinks or breaks, you can always toss it into a trifle! I’ve had a few cake fails over the years that still tasted great but didn’t look great and I improvised and made a trifle with the broken cake pieces.

The Fan Favorite

I created this recipe many years ago when I hosted my niece’s bridal shower. I made four different trifles and this one was the favorite. I’ll share the other recipes in future posts but trifles are easy to make up on the fly! The one below in the back was made with a chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, whipped cream, and salted caramel. The one next to it was made with yellow cake, whipped cream, vanilla pudding, chocolate syrup, and a Heath bar crumbled in between the layers. The one on the front was made with yellow cake, vanilla pudding, whipped cream mixed with cream cheese, and fresh berries. I seriously just threw them together and used combinations that I thought would go good together!

Another thing I love about trifle is how quick and easy it is to make.

You can use a store-bought cake mix unless you have a special cake recipe you prefer.

For this one I used a lemon box cake mix, you can use any brand or make one from scratch. For the puddings, I used Jello brand lemon cooked pudding (which looks more like lemon curd or lemon pie filling) and lemon instant pudding and followed the directions on the boxes.

For the whipped cream, you can use cool whip or whip heavy cream. It’s totally up to you!

I have done it both ways but if you’re short on time and want to make it extra simple, you can use all the store-bought items I just mentioned.

Strawberry Lemon Trifle Dessert

This trifle recipe is quick and easy to make using store-bought ingredients. It's perfect for any baby or bridal shower, a summer barbecue, or any time you want a refreshing, simple dessert.

• 1 Trifle Bowl

Ingredients

• 1 box Lemon Cake Mix (eggs, oil, water, made as directed)
• 1 large Box Jello Lemon Cooked Pudding (eggs, water, sugar, made as directed)
• 1 small Box Lemon Instant Pudding (milk, made as directed)
• 1 large Container Cool Whip
• 1 quart Strawberries, cut into slices
• 1 Lemon for garnish if preferred

Instructions

• Bake the 1 box Lemon Cake Mix (eggs, oil, water, made as directed). Set aside and let cool.
• While the cake is baking, make the 1 large Box Jello Lemon Cooked Pudding (eggs, water, sugar, made as directed) as directed and let cool. (You can set it aside to cool while the cake is baking and cooling off.)
• Make the 1 small Box Lemon Instant Pudding (milk, made as directed) as directed. Stir in half of the container of Cool Whip and mix well.
• Once the cake has fully cooled off, cut the cake into 1-2" squares. Use a spatula to loosen the little pieces of cake and remove the cake from the baking sheet or pan.
• Next start layering the ingredients into the trifle bowl. Start by layering some of the cake pieces onto the bottom of the trifle bowl loosely until most of it is covered. Next layer some of the lemon-cooked pudding (this looks more like lemon curd) on top of the cake until covered.
• Then layer some of the lemon pudding/cool whip mixture on top of the other lemon cooked pudding and then add some of the sliced strawberries on top. To make it pretty, you can add some strawberries along the inside of the bowl and then scatter the rest on top of the pudding mixture.
• Add another layer of cake, then the lemon cooked pudding, lemon pudding/cool whip then strawberries and layer this way until the trifle bowl is almost full. I can usually fit two layers into a trifle bowl but it can vary depending on how big your bowl is. You might even have enough to make a second one or make a mini one for later if you have leftover cake and pudding.
• Add some of the remaining cool whip on top and then garnish with strawberries and lemons if preferred.
• Refrigerate until ready to serve. I like to make mine a little bit ahead so it all has time to chill in the fridge before serving.

Summertime Barbecue Recipes and Entertaining Ideas

One of my favorite things about summertime is having a family barbecue so today I’m sharing some of my favorite Summertime Barbecue Recipes and Entertaining Ideas for hosting your own backyard barbecue. Summertime is all about good food and good times with family and friends!

Planning the Menu

I have so many great recipes that are perfect for a summertime backyard barbecue and I’m sharing some of my favorites here. I like using the freshest, high-quality, organic ingredients when possible as I think that makes everything taste better! For this barbecue, I made my famous baby back ribs, baked beans, fresh peach pie with cream cheese filling, my caramel cream cheese fruit dip and fresh fruit, corn on the cob, chopped green salad with a lemon and olive oil vinaigrette, sugar cookies, and limeade for the drink.

On the morning of the barbecue, I went to my favorite store Fred Meyer to get everything I needed for the barbecue. I love Fred Meyer because it’s a one-stop shop. Not only can I get high-quality produce, meat, and organic ingredients, but I was able to get everything else I needed there too, including flowers!

I always like to have flowers on my table when I’m hosting a party or gathering and Fred Meyer has a great selection of flowers. On this particular visit to the store, the lady working in the floral department helped me find the perfect flowers for my summer table.

I also needed a new basting brush for the ribs and found the perfect one in the kitchen section of the store. Some of my favorite sets of dishes and entertaining items are also from Fred Meyer. I always find myself taking a stroll through the dish section! (See these posts for some of my Fred Meyer dish sets here and here)

I am a very busy person (aren’t we all!?) and hosting a gathering can be a little overwhelming so when I can get everything I need in one store, it’s a win-win!

The Private Selection brand is my favorite line of products in Fred Meyer and I use them all the time. They also have their in-house Kroger brand which is also high quality and affordable.

You can find almost everything you need in the Kroger brand family. Fred Meyer promises freshness and quality in all their products. Whether it’s meat or produce, Fred Meyer has everything you need for your summer grilling and entertaining.

Another thing that I really like is how Fred Meyer makes it so easy to shop. They offer easy pickup and delivery options for you to get all your groceries and supplies in one place. This makes hosting at home so much easier. Man oh man do I wish this had been an option when I had little kids!

I often order my groceries online and do the pickup option. I don’t even have to get out of my car! When it’s raining in Seattle, which it is often, this is the best thing ever!

Summertime Entertaining Ideas

When it’s really hot outside, I like to set up my serving table inside the house where it’s cool during the summer months. We don’t have a lot of shade in our backyard at our home in Utah and it gets quite warm in our backyard. When I do a barbecue at our home in Washington, we have a fully shaded backyard so it’s much easier to set up outdoors. Either way is great, so do whatever is best for your circumstances.

Even though many of our summer plans have been put on hold, we can still gather at home with those closest to us and enjoy the delicious food that is in season. Making home-cooked meals and gathering as a family is the perfect way to pass the time and make some great family memories.

As I mentioned above, I like to add flowers in matching vases onto the serving table and create different heights. In this photo here you can see that I used an old wooden crate riser to set the flowers and serving utensils higher on the table.

I like to use a decorative utensil caddy for the silverware, matching serving bowls and platters. Another fun way to serve the drinks is in a decorative drink dispenser. Get creative by adding a table runner or tablecloth to match.

For this set up I used a navy blue table runner down the middle of the table and went with all-white and blue serving dishes. The yellow sunflowers added a pop of color.

The Best Blackberry Crumble Recipe

One of the things I’ve always loved about living in the Pacific Northwest (Washington and Oregon) is berry season. Every berry you can imagine grows extremely well here and there are farms aplenty to buy them at or you can pick your own. I look forward to berry season each year and have been so excited to share this family favorite recipe with you!

I’ve also joined up with some of my talented friends to share more favorite berry recipes. Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of this post for the other delicious berry recipes. These recipes are perfect for summertime entertaining or any time of the year.

In the Pacific Northwest, wild blackberries grow everywhere (they are actually an invasive species) and I’ve always picked buckets full right out of my yard.
They are easy to freeze in ziplock bags to be made into pies, cobblers, and crumbles

. Blackberries have a lot of seeds in them and can be a little tart which makes them the perfect berry to use in one of these types of recipes.

Blackberry Crumble Recipe

A few years ago my neighbors in Washington brought over the most delicious apple crisp and it was so good that I asked her for the recipe. I decided to try some other variations of it and this Blackberry Crumble is one of them. I think this one is my favorite. I’ve used tart cherries and blueberries too so feel free to improvise! I put instructions for the variations in the recipe below.

This is a simple recipe for making your own Pumpkin Pie Spice.  I use this pumpkin pie spice recipe in my pumpkin pie, pumpkin cream cheese muffins, pumpkin roll, and any recipe that calls for pumpkin spice or pumpkin pie spice.

At times, I’ve had a difficult time finding it in the grocery store and it is quite expensive for a small amount. You can make a batch of your own and store it in a spice container or small mason jar.

Ingredients

• 3 tbsp ground cinnamon
• 2 tbsp ground ginger
• 1 1/2 tbsp ground allspice

It’s time for another post on my Holiday Hosting at home series!  I’ve teamed up with two of my talented friends who enjoy hosting and entertaining as much as I do. This week are sharing some recipes, tablescapes, and fall decor. With Halloween and Thanksgiving right around the corner we have come up with some fun ideas for hosting and entertaining. To Have + To Host

A few years ago, Lory was drawn to a beautiful fall tablescape from a high-end table-top rental company.  When she added up the cost of it for 6 people she realized it would be about $2000! She decided to try and duplicate it for much less and was able to do it for $200. She shares the original tablescape that she found the inspiration from and her version of it and how she was able to do it for less money.  Click here to see Lory’s Friendsgiving Tablescape.

Next, Lory shares how she made these super cute jack-o-lantern stuffed peppers. They are simple to make, yet impressive! They are also healthy! Veggies and Protien all in one!  The recipe calls for turkey or beef but you can use quinoa to make it vegetarian. Home with Holliday

Holliday was inspired to make this beautiful  Thanksgiving Tree with Pumpkins from a bin of unused fall decor items. This is such a creative idea and if you love christmas trees like I do, here is one more reason to make a thanksgiving tree! Click on the link above for the details!

Holliday also shared her Elegant Halloween Tablescape with Pumpkins. The colors are the traditional halloween black and orange, but Holliday added in some softer colors that make this table a little more elegant. I absolutely love how this turned out! For the details, click on the the link above.

This week I shared my Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin recipe on the blog.  This is one of my favorite fall recipes.  My family loves it when I make theses and they don’t last long when they come out of the oven.  I also shared a recipe on how to make your own Pumpkin Spice.  This can be used in any recipe that calls for pumpkin spice or pumpkin pie spice.  You can make your own spice mix and never run out! Both recipes are linked above in the same post.

Lazy Daisy Cake

The year before my Grandma Benson passed away, I gave her a recipe box filled with blank recipe cards as a Christmas gift.  The following Christmas, she gave the box back to me and had handwritten her favorite recipes on the recipe cards.  A month after this, she passed away. The recipes she wrote for me have become one of my most treasured possessions. Whenever I make this simple, yummy cake recipe, I think of her and the fond memories I have of her.  

One of my favorite recipes that she left for me was “Aunt Mickey’s Lazy Daisy Cake.”  It’s a sponge cake with a cooked, then broiled frosting. This is a family favorite and another one of the recipes I grew up enjoying.  We loved it when Grandma Benson (that’s her in the picture frame when she was a little girl) would come to visit because we knew she’d make us a Lazy Daisy Cake and her Chicken Cracker Casserole. I will need to share that recipe soon, too!  I haven’t been able to figure out who Aunt Mickey is, but I am sure happy she gave this recipe to my grandma!

Holly’s Helpful Tips:

[holly_healthful_tips]*I usually double the recipe for both the cake and the frosting and bake it in a 9 x 13 pan.  If you have a smaller crowd, you can use an 8×8 or 9×9 pan.

*Don’t overcook the cake.  When it’s a light brown on the top and springs back after you touch the middle, it is done.  You can also insert a toothpick in the middle of the cake and if it comes back clean, it’s done.

*This recipe calls for scalded milk which is milk brought nearly to a boil and then slightly cooled down. Scalded milk makes sponge cakes springier. Slowly heat milk over medium-low heat. The key here is to heat the milk, but not to bring it to a boil. Boiling will burn your milk. Stir continuously to prevent milk from thickening, burning, or sticking to the bottom of the pan. Look for steam and small bubbles around the edges of your saucepan, then remove immediately from heat.[/holly_healthful_tips]

Lazy Daisy Cake

Course Dessert

Prep Time 25 minutes minutes

Total Time 55 minutes minutes

Servings 6

Ingredients

• 1 cup sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1 cup flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

• Sift together 1 cup flour, 1 tsp baking powder, and 1/2 tsp salt in a bowl and set aside.
• Butter and flour an 8×8 or 9×9 cake pan, and set aside.
• With a hand or stand mixer, beat 2 eggs until creamy. Gradually add the 1 cup sugar in while still beating the eggs. Fold in the sifted ingredients. Scald the 1/2 cup milk in a small saucepan and then add 1 tbsp butter into the milk and stir until the butter is melted. Add the milk and butter into the mixing bowl all at once. Mix until incorporated. Don’t over-mix the batter. This is a thin batter.
• Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes until the cake is done in the middle. It will turn golden brown on top.
• When the cake is done, take it out of the oven and set it aside. Then make the frosting.

Lazy Daisy Frosting

This is a cooked frosting made in a saucepan and then broiled in the oven after it's spread on top of the cake. 

Ingredients

• 5 tbsp brown sugar
• 3 tbsp butter
• 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut
• 3 tbsp evaporated milk

Instructions

• In a saucepan combine all the ingredients and stir.  
• Bring to a boil on medium-high heat and stir until bubbling. Remove from the heat and pour on top of the warm cake. Spread the frosting to cover the entire cake.
• Turn the oven onto broil and return the cake to the oven on the top rack just under the broiler. Leave the oven door cracked open so you can watch the cake. Don’t walk away as this happens quite fast and you don’t want to burn the frosting. When the frosting starts to bubble, take the cake out and serve it warm.

Have you ever eaten something and after the first bite, you were transported back to a fond memory? That’s how I feel every time I eat these scones and honey butter!

The Story Behind the Scones and Honey Butter

One of my earliest memories from my childhood was going to a restaurant called Me & Stan’s in Rexburg, Idaho with my grandparents. I distinctly remember the first time I bit into their scones covered in honey butter and I’ve been hooked ever since! Every time I visited my grandparents in Idaho, I always had to go to Me & Stan’s and get my fill. When I went to college in Idaho, I carried on my tradition and would go there often with my roommates.

When I was driving through Rigby, Idaho a few weeks back, I discovered that Me & Stan’s had closed!  I was heartbroken. Not only are the scones and honey butter my favorite thing on this planet, but the memories made there were precious to me.  I couldn’t imagine going the rest of my life without one of Stan’s scones slathered in honey butter! Going there every summer made me feel close to my grandparents who passed away many years ago. Later that week I googled Me & Stan’s and figured out that Stan, now 83 years old, had retired. I had tried to figure out how to make these on my own over the years and could never quite get it right.

After thinking about it for a couple of days, I decided to try to track Stan down. I figured it was a small town and he couldn’t be too hard to find! I got online again to search, and sure enough, there was Stan’s phone number! I called and he answered on the first ring! I introduced myself and told him about my memories of being a little girl and going to his restaurant with my grandparents and continuing to visit during my college days. We chatted for a while and he seemed delighted that I had called him. We became fast friends and we realized he had known many of my extended relatives who had passed on. I decided to get up the nerve to ask him if I could buy his recipes! He told me that he had sold it to a company in Utah and I was crushed! We continued to chat and I shared with him how I had tried replicating his honey butter and scone dough, but I couldn’t quite get it right!  I told him all the ingredients I had used for the honey butter and he shared that I was really close to getting it right. He suggested to use a simple syrup made of sugar and water instead of powdered sugar and validated the rest of the ingredients I had mentioned to help me try to figure it out.  

I then asked him about the dough. He told me to find a sweet bread or roll dough recipe from an old Idaho cookbook. Well, I just happened to have some of my grandma’s old Idaho cookbooks and I started looking through them. I was able to find a handful of recipes, so I had a good idea of what the right ingredients were. I started playing around with some of the recipes I found and I think I’ve finally come up with the perfect scone dough recipe that is as close to Stan’s as I can get!

I used a couple of Stan’s suggestions and was able to get the honey butter down perfectly as well! I was so excited! My family was too, of course, because now I can make the same scones and honey butter that they had grown up eating when we’d visited family in Idaho.

I appreciated the time Stan took to speak with me. He is a sweet and dear man! As we were ending our conversation, he told me to give him a call next time I’m in Idaho and we will go have a coke! I hope to be able to do that with him someday. I’ll never forget the impact this sweet man has had on my life with his delicious recipes and for taking the time to speak with me and share some tips to help me replicate the scones and honey butter. I hope you will also be able to feel a little bit of his love when you try these for yourselves!

[holly_healthful_tips]   Holly’s Helpful Tips:

*Lukewarm is hotter than you think so make sure your water and milk are warm enough to activate the yeast. Make sure the sugar is mixed in well too.

*If you don’t have a kitchen aid mixer, you can use any mixer that has a dough hook to mix up the dough.  If you don’t have a stand mixer, you will want to mix it together with a spoon and then lay it on a floured surface and knead the dough by hand until it’s all mixed together well.

* For frying, I use a cast iron pan, but any deep frying pan will do.

*You can use vegetable or canola oil if you don’t have peanut oil or are dealing with any food allergies

*This will make a large batch of honey butter, but it can be stored for quite awhile in the refrigerator. You can half it if you don’t want to make this large of a batch. We use honey butter on cornbread, biscuits and my homemade rolls to so it’s nice to have a container of it on hand.

*When you’ve mixed all of the honey butter ingredients together, let it go a little longer to incorporate some air into it. This will make it more like a whipped butter.   [/holly_healthful_tips]

Stan’s Honey Butter

Prep Time 15 minutes minutes

Chill Time 1 hour hour

Servings 50

Ingredients

• 1 lb Butter Room Temperature
• 1 lb Margarine Room Temperature
• 14 oz Marshmallow Creme
• 1/2 cup Water
• 1/2 cup Sugar
• 1 1/2 cup Honey

Instructions

• Mix 1/2 cup Water and 1/2 cup Sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. As soon as the sugar has dissolved, remove it from the heat. Set aside to cool.
• In a stand mixer or large bowl with a hand mixer, whip 1 lb Butter, and 1 lb Margarine until they start to become fluffy. Then add in 1 1/2 cup Honey, 14 oz Marshmallow Creme, and the simple syrup.
• Keep whipping it until it’s all mixed together well and has formed a creamy, whipped consistency. 
• Refrigerate 1-2 hours or until use.

Stan’s Scones

In Idaho and Utah, people call fried bread scones! This recipe is straight from this area and tastes amazing! Fried bread has a lot of names depending on where it comes from in the world but whatever you choose to call it, it's always good! Give this scones and honey butter a try, you'll not regret it!

Ingredients

• 1 cup Water Lukewarm
• 1 cup Milk Lukewarm
• 1 TBSP Yeast
• 1/4 cup Butter Melted
• 4 TBSP Sugar
• 5 cups Flour
• 2 tsp Salt
• Peanut Oil For Frying

Instructions

• In a mixer or large mixing bowl, blend 1 cup Water, 1 cup Milk, 4 TBSP Sugar, and 1 TBSP Yeast and blend together well. Let stand until it bubbles and looks frothy on top.
• Melt 1/4 cup Butter and set aside. 
• In a separate bowl, whisk the 5 cups Flour and 2 tsp Salt together.
• When yeast mixture is ready, add in the melted butter and then slowly add the flour and salt mixture one cup at a time. Mix together until everything is mixed together well.  
• Spray a large bowl with cooking spray and transfer dough into it. Cover with a damp dishcloth and put in warm place for the dough to rise. Let rise for about an hour or until the dough has almost doubled in size.
• Sprinkle extra flour onto a clean surface and dump out the dough onto the floured surface. Rub flour around your rolling pin and start to roll the dough out into a rectangle. Roll out to about ½” thick and then cut them into 3”x3” sized squares.  
• Put about 1-2” of Peanut Oil in a cast iron pan and heat to about 320-330 degrees. Do not exceed 340 or you will burn the dough. The scones should float in the oil and not sit on the bottom of the pan while frying.
• Fry scones on each side until a light brown color and flip over and do the same on the other side. They will begin to puff up. Drain on a plate with paper towels.
• Serve warm with honey butter.
