To create this look, take a plain leafy green wreath and fill it in with cherry or apple blossoms and then add a bow to it.

How to Style a Spring Wreath with Ribbon and Bows

If you’ve ever wondered how to style a spring wreath with ribbon, this is where you can really make your wreath feel custom and unique to your home.

One of my favorite ways to style wreaths is by using a ribbon bundle. These curated bundles make it so easy to mix patterns, textures, and colors without overthinking it. I have premade a handful of these spring ribbon bundles and added them into our spring collection.

As the weather cools down and leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red, it’s the perfect time to transition your home decor for the fall season. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year because it gives us the opportunity to embrace warm, inviting, and cozy elements that make our spaces feel like a comforting retreat. Below, I’ve gathered some of my favorite fall decor ideas that will help you transform your home into an autumn haven.

One of the easiest ways to bring the fall season into your home is by swapping out your summer hues for a more fall-inspired palette. Think burnt oranges, deep burgundies, mustard yellows, and warm browns. These colors evoke a sense of warmth and can be used throughout your space in throw pillows, blankets, and even art prints.

What says “fall” more than pumpkins? Whether real or faux, pumpkins are a must-have for fall decor. You can find ceramic or wooden pumpkins in neutral shades for a minimalist look or opt for traditional orange ones to give a pop of color. Styling Peonies: Tips for Creating Beautiful Arrangements

Peonies are one of the most beloved flowers in the world, and it’s easy to see why. With their soft, fluffy petals and sweet fragrance, peonies add a touch of elegance and beauty to any space. If you’re lucky enough to have peonies in your garden or can get them from a florist, you may be wondering how to style them in your home to showcase their beauty. In this blog post, we’ll share some tips on how to style peonies in a vase, as well as some peony floral styling tips and ideas on how to care for them. Choosing the Right Vase

When it comes to styling and arranging peonies, the first step is to choose the right vase. Peonies have large, heavy blooms, so you’ll need a sturdy vase that can support their weight or some type of flower frog, chicken wire support structure, or a tape grid. You can also use floral foam but I’m not a huge fan of that as it’s terrible for the environment.

A wide-mouthed vase is also ideal, as it will allow the flowers to open fully and display their beauty. Consider using a compote, which will showcase the beauty of the flowers while adding a touch of elegance to your space. 

 

 

 

 

 

Pair with Other Flowers

Peonies are stunning on their own, but they also pair well with other flowers to create a beautiful arrangement.

Consider pairing them with other soft and romantic blooms, such as roses, hydrangeas, or ranunculus. You can also add some greenery, such as eucalyptus or ferns, to add texture and interest to your arrangement.

Choose the Right Location

Once you’ve arranged your peonies, it’s important to choose the right location to showcase their beauty. Peonies are versatile flowers and can be used in a variety of settings, from a formal dining room to a casual living room. Consider placing your arrangement on a coffee table, dining table, kitchen island, or mantle for maximum impact.

Caring for Your Peonies

To keep your peonies looking their best, it’s important to care for them properly. Cut the stems at a diagonal angle, and remove any leaves that will be submerged in water. Change the water every other day, and keep your arrangement in a cool, well-ventilated area. You can also mist the flowers with water to help them stay fresh.

Storing Peony Flowers

Did you know you can store cut peonies to use at a later date? You can cut peonies and store them for several weeks, even up to months depending on the variety. The key to storing peonies in the refrigerator and having them bloom at a much later date is knowing when to cut them and how to properly store them. Here is what Michigan State University said:

“The first thing you need to know is when to cut the peonies. The timing needs to be precise. To store a peony for proper bloom and achieve a vase life of five to 10 days, you need to cut the flowers when the buds are showing some color and are soft like a marshmallow, according to Wilma Jackson from the Sunny Dale Spring Peony Farm in Valley Center, Kansas. During the bloom time of peonies, you must check them several times a day to make sure you are cutting at the proper developmental stage.”

I’ve tried this method and it works! Just make sure your refrigerator doesn’t freeze them. You can also dip the bottom of the cut stems in wax and wrap them up. I’ve seen other growers do it this way. Once you are ready to use them after storing, just recut the stems and place in water. What a great way to to extend the peony season!

Here’s another table I set with peonies grown at All My Thyme flowers at Laughing Goat Flower Farm. We got together and had the best day creating beautiful table settings with gorgeous flowers. The dishes were my great grandmas and I made my lemon cake and blueberry muffins. I loved this so much!

I’m looking forward to visiting Pure Peonies again in June! This is another beautiful flower farm here in the Pacific Northwest.

Mauve Peony Flower Arrangement

Today I’m going to share how I made this Mauve Peony Flower Arrangement with faux flowers to create this beautiful spring floral arrangement. There are some tips and tricks to using artificial flowers that will make your flower arrangements look great and I’ll share the pros and cons of using artificial/faux flowers.

The Pros of Using Artificial Flowers

Faux Flowers last forever.

Faux flowers last forever if you take good care of them and store them properly. You never have to worry about them dying. You invest about the same amount of money or close to it, for real flowers but they are dead and gone in a week or less. Try using high end faux flowers next time and see how beautiful they are!

They are easy to bend and shape.

Artificial flowers are easy to bend and shape to fit your arrangement and they tend to stand up and stay where you place them, especially if they have a support system like a tape grid, chicken wire base, or floral foam. I’m not a huge fan of floral foam though as it’s terrible for the planet! Try using a chicken wire base if you want another option.

Faux flower quality is improving.

Another pro with using artificial or faux florals and greenery is that that the overall quality of flowers you can purchase now is amazing!

I typically only use the high-end type flowers, and people often ask me on my Instagram how I keep my flowers alive. Thats how nice they are! Many people think they are real!

They are so beautiful that they look real.

There are a lot of “real touch” flowers on the market nowadays and the quality just keeps getting better! I’ve linked the ones I used here for this Mauve Peony Flower Arrangement at the bottom of the post.

Artificial flowers are also much easier to come by when real flowers are out of season or hard to get.

Let’s be honest, peonies are only in season for about 3-4 weeks in early summer and that’s way to short!

The Cons of Using Artificial Flowers

They don’t have any smell.

I guess that could be a pro though if you have allergies!

They are not real and at the end of the day, fresh flowers are still my favorite to use but when they are not in season or hard to get, artificial flowers come in handy.

If you don’t swap them out often or don’t dust much, they do tend to get dusty.

I change flowers out often for the seasons so I don’t have that problem and I store them in my basement when not in use and keep them in a dust free area. Give them a good shake if they are dusty.

You have to store them somewhere in your home.

I am fortunate to have a basement in both my homes where I have ample storage space to keep all my flowers and seasonal home decor.

I prefer to store mine in french flower cans or buckets and I like to store similar colors and seasonal flowers together. I will also use large clear plastic garbage bags from Costco to put over the top of the flowers or greenery that I store in buckets or bins. This also helps keep them from getting dusty.

It’s a little harder to create arrangements that look asymmetrical and how they would appear in nature.

I like to give each flower it’s own space to breath and using real flowers allows for this to happen a little easier but if you use a proper support structure, you can achieve a beautiful look with the faux florals as well.

How to Arrange Faux Flowers

Now that we have covered some of the pros and cons of artificial flowers, let’s talk about how to arrange them.

One of my favorite techniques is to use a grid.

There are many ways to do this and in this particular arrangement, I used a grid that came with another vase I bought years ago. It was the perfect size for the antique crock opening and I used floral tape to attach it to the crock.

The grid provides some support and a little structure for the flowers. In a wider mouthed jar, vase, or crock, as I’ve used here, this really comes in handy.

I used clear floral tape and placed a few pieces of tape across the top of the crock and then laid the metal floral grid on top of the tape and then taped that down so it wouldn’t move.

I used a marble lazy susan to set the vase on and then I started arranging the flowers. This helps to see all sides of the arrangement. I learned this method years ago at a floral arranging workshop at my friend Dawn’s All My Thyme Rose Farm.

Start arranging your flowers.

Now that you have your tape grid or floral grid secure and a lazy susan, you can start arranging your flowers. I used two types of faux peonies. One was a dark mauve color and the other a similar color but with some contrast and a little smaller.

I love the simplicity of these colors and how they are similar but different.

I started adding a layer of the larger peonies then added in a layer of the smaller peonies. I used the the lazy susan to spin the vase around so I could see any holes or areas in the arrangement that looked sparse. I added both the large and small flowers in until it looked balanced and full. I was amazed at how many flowers I was able to fit into this crock!

This DIY dough bowl centerpiece is so easy to make! In this post, I’ll be sharing all the sources and step by step instructions.

What You’ll Need

Floral Tape

Wire Cutters

Faux Flowers and Greenery:

Step by Step Instructions

Take the clear floral tape and make a grid on the top of the dough bowl. I did seven vertical lines of tape and two horizontal.

You want to leave a large enough space in each section to slide your flowers into.

You can also use chicken wire or floral foam but I prefer the tape method.

Once the tape grid is on, press down on all the sides to make sure it’s adhered nicely.

Start layering in the olive branch greenery. I started on the outside working in. Go opposite of each other. You can watch this video here.

Once the greenery is done, start adding in the blueberry stems, then add in the flowers on top of the greenery and blueberries.

When you’re done adding in all the flowers, make sure each flower has space and then add in some smaller greenery stems to fill in any holes. For the smaller greenery, I used mini sage branches. They are linked above.

The Tablescape and other Details

After making the dough bowl floral centerpiece, I set the rest of the table.

The dishes are from Target and have been sold out for awhile but check my links below to see if they are back in stock. I linked some of the other colors in the collection. The color of my dishes in this post are blue.

Flower Farms of the Pacific Northwest Series Part Two – Purple Haze Lavender Farm

I’m so excited to be sharing another post on the Flower Farms of the Pacific Northwest Series. The farm I’m highlighting is called Purple Haze Lavender Farm and is a seven-acre certified organic lavender farm located in Sequim, Washington’s on the Olympic Peninsula.

There are so many lavender farms in this area but so far, Purple Haze has been my favorite one to visit. I met the owner last summer when I went for the first time and enjoyed visiting with him at the farm. The farm was recently sold and I hope the new owners will continue to keep it the same way!

The Beauty of a Lavender Farm

There are thousands of lavender plants to wander amongst at Purple Haze and there is a gift shop which features Purple Haze Lavender farm’s products. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and relax and for five dollars, you can cut your own bundle of lavender to take home. The smell of fresh lavender is magnificent!

The farm has many varieties of lavender and there is one variety that is pink!  Lavender is so beautiful, especially when it blooms. The best time of year to see it blooming is mid July to early August. I typically go during that time frame so I can see the fields in full bloom. There is a lavender festival every July in Sequim.

Have you ever seen lavender close up as it’s blooming? Its so pretty. I blew this photo up so you could see the detail more clearly. All these photos were taken in July of 2020 at Purple Haze Lavender Farm. The owner was so gracious and gave me a private tour of the farm and gardens. I went back again this summer but missed seeing it in full bloom. It was still beautiful though and you can see the reel video I made from this years visit on my Instagram @homewithhollyj

Purple Haze also allows you to walk in the lavender fields are are very generous with how they allow everyone to experience the farm. There are some great opportunities for photos here too.

There is no charge to visit the farm and there is ample parking. There are also some farm animals including a peacock and lots of cute chickens.

The farm also has a beautiful garden full of flowers and vegetables. When I went last year, the owner had planted all his vegetable plants in straw bales. I was totally fascinated by this. He told me that the plants do amazing planted this way and by the end of the season, they are just small clumps on the ground. I’m going to have to try this method sometime!

Our favorite place to eat in Sequim is called The Oak Table Cafe. They have the best pancakes I’ve ever had that are made with a sourdough starter. Everything is delicious though!

Sequim also has a farmers and artisans market on Saturdays, May thru October from 9am to 3 pm and located at the City Hall Plaza. The downtown area is charming with a lot of cute shops and some great places to eat.

Sequim Farmers and Artisans Market

This is the Dungeness Spit and is near Sequim and the views of  the Straight of Juan De Fuca are incredible. This is a state park and you can hike down to the ocean for these views. That is Canada off in the distance in the top left of the picture.

Sequim is also located in the Olympic National Forest’s rain shadow and receives way less rain than the rest of western Washington. It’s the cutest town and so worth the drive or a ferry ride from Seattle.

“At Purple Haze in the summer we welcome you to wander our lavender fields, enjoy a scoop of lavender ice cream, and shop in either of our two stores-one of which is located on the farm itself  and the other one which is located in downtown Sequim at 127 W Washington Street.  During our “winter” months only our Downtown gift shop location remains open.  However, we always welcome visitors to enjoy the farm and then if you wish to shop just stop at our store downtown and we will be happy to help you with your lavender purchases.  Our store in Downtown Sequim is OPEN year round Tuesday-Friday 9-5, Saturday 10-5 and Sundays 12-4.  Pets are always welcome at the farm!”

Blue and Yellow Summer/Fall DIY Floral Arrangement

I created this Blue and Yellow Summer And Fall DIY Floral Arrangement for my kitchen island a few weeks back. It’s the perfect faux flower arrangement to transition from summer into fall. It’s super easy to make, and I’ll link as many of the sources below for you so you can recreate it for your home!

Using Faux Flowers

I used to avoid faux flowers because they look fake and were not high quality. Over the past few years, I’ve changed my viewpoint on faux or artificial flowers because I’ve found some really high quality ones that I can use many times over. Invest in some higher end flowers and if you take care of the properly and store them in upright containers when not in use, you can re-use them for years to come!

Another reason I like to use faux flowers is that they last forever! I do love fresh flowers, but it’s also nice to create an arrangement like this that I can use in my kitchen and home decor for weeks on end.

Non-Transitional Fall Colors

Another thing I like to do is use non-traditional fall colors, especially as we transition from summer to fall. Sunflowers are in bloom right now and they are what inspired me to make this flower arrangement. I have a lot of blue in my home so I thought it would be the perfect mix of blue and the dark yellow sunflowers for this centerpiece.

Kitchen Decor

I like changing out my dishes and decor items on my open shelves in my kitchen, and because I used these rustic, blue flower vases in my island centerpiece, it was only fitting that I used my dark blue dishes and other yellow colored dishes and rustic accents.

Get Creative with your Decor Theme

How do I come up with the colors and themes for my decor? I am always inspired by what is in season. Sunflowers are blooming in my garden, as are my blueberries. Even though these are faux, they still represent what is in season. I also did a similar colored tablescape, and the dishes I used were another part of the inspiration for this flower arrangement.

Here’s a peek at my coordinating tablescape using blue and yellow colors.

Use what you already have or purchase a few flowers or a vase that inspires you. I’ve had these vases for months now and finally found a way to incorporate them into my decor. I have a lot of blue decor in my house, so this was also a great fit.

My Tips on Arranging Flowers

Whether you’re using faux or fresh flowers, the floral arranging techniques are the same. I work in odd numbers and typically use three or five of each flower. I had five sunflowers stems, five blueberry stems, three of the taller forsythia stems, and five of the smaller sunflowers or marigolds. I then added in three white peony stems to fill in the space and add some balancing white. Look on all sides of the vase to make sure each view looks even and filled in.

One thing I like to use is a Lazy Susan Turntable. You can spin the vase around and makes floral arranging so much easier. I also bend the wire stems to create different lengths or you can also cut them using wire cutters.

Summer/Fall Sunflower Centerpiece

I’m sharing all the sources and details of this easy to make Summer/Fall Sunflower Centerpiece. It was really easy to make and I love that it works perfect for summer and easily transitions into fall.

Antique English Salt Glaze Stoneware Crock

I found this beautiful antique english salt glaze stoneware crock at a local store in Utah called Highland Gardens. They had many sizes and I thought it would work perfect for this summer to fall floral arrangement.

Using Artificial Flowers

I love fresh flowers but I also enjoy using artificial or faux flowers. They last forever and you can use them over and over again and they never die!

Summer to Fall Colors

I chose yellow and orange colored flowers because they work well for the summer as well as the fall. I love how this turned out and using the antique salt glaze crock added another layer of fall-ish colors to my arrangement.

I’ve linked all the sources for the flowers and some similar salt glazed crocks below. This crock is an antique so I linked some similar items that would work for you to replicate this same look!

I like to place a centerpiece arrangement in the center of my island in my kitchen for each season.

Everyone asks how I reach the island…….well here’s the behind the scenes!
